Dear AFF'ers,

I've got a question :

I'm looking to sign up for another credit card - got some expenses coming up and was thinking it would be better if I put them on a new credit card rather than existing ones.

I've got a Qantas AMEX Ultimate - love it, $450 travel credit each year cancels out the membership fee - great

I've been with Amex over 18 months

Now, I'm in a dilemma - for the next credit card, what do you guys suggest - do I get another Qantas AMEX Ultimate, which means one more serving of the aforementioned benefits or should I get a Qantas Amex business card ?

I run a small business too, so I've got an ABN registered for GST. The only downside to the business card is that there is no travel credit to cancel out the $450 fee. The upside is there is 3x Qantas points on flights with QF# within Australia (is this right?)

I don't travel much within Australia anyway and most of my trips are overseas, mostly India, or within Asia. So not many QF 3x points earning potential ...

Confused ... looking for some suggestions :)

Cheers,
Ade

Why get another Amex when you’re not eligible for a sign up bonus? Plenty of other great offers out there, like ANZ FF black

or if you want a business card, this Westpac one:

Are you aware of the existing member rule? You can't get the bonus points if you are an existing member or have been an existing member within the last 18 months.

Or may be this is a card in your partners name and they don't currently have an AMEX?

Thanks, @Doctore1003 - I already have this card. Was looking to churn because I've got some big expenses coming up.

Re : Westpac business - Thanks, I'll look into this now :)

Yes, but I misread this rule as in, I thought I could get another AMEX with the bonus sign on if I've signed up for an AMEX card prior to 18 months from the date of applying for another new AMEX card.

Silly me! :(

Looks like I'm going to have to forget getting another AMEX unless I can cancel the one I currently have and wait for 18 months :(

Re : Partner - I don't have one, single :) (Although, it's the 14th Feb and it's only 12 PM where I'm based, who knows, lady luck might smile at me today :p )

Existing member rules apply for all credit cards. They are normally 12 or 18 months. So you need to cancel a card as soon as possible in order to start the clock on that 12 or 18 month period. This is what 'churn and burn' strategy is all about.

We all make mistakes and learn from them. That's what AF is for. And in this case it appears no harm was suffered!

Thank you. Yes, no harm suffered :) I might look into CC offerings from other banks for my use

You could look into the co-branded Westpac Amex as this is considered separate from Amex-issued cards. Not sure if they have a decent offer on at the moment though.

I looked into the co-branded AMEX & MC bundle - not lucrative ATM ... 100,000 points for A$ 7K spend ... as opposed to Westpac biz platinum which gives 100,000 for A$ 3K spend

Only downside to the bundle is a double hit to the credit report.

This one is not a prestigious card, nor a good points earner. However the QANTAS Discovery Amex is absolutely free, gratis.
It does not have any travel credit either but it will also not cost you an annual fee.

I use it as a back pocket card for emergencies and one I give to my kids as a supplementary card when they travel. They are not to use it for travel expenses, only for getting themselves out of trouble when they have no cash.
