So I booked the family a trip SYD-PER in June and was careful to select flights on the A330. As a WP I like getting free YX upgrades but was surprised there is no YX on the A330. So my question, for those who have done this route in Y, what are the best seats to choose? There are 8 of us in total.

Has this changed?
I haven’t been in Y for a long time on VA’s A330 but I thought the whole 8 seats in row 28 were designated as Economy X

Row 28 is Economy X.

As a WP, Row 10 is a better option. But with 8 people that might not be possible. Up to you how you split the group, but I'd just stick to the front of the plane.

Remember the equipment can swap at any time. If it goes to 737, then you will obviously be better off in the YX stakes.

VA certainly do pull the equipment changes:
My family and I have MEL-PER booked in April and like most, had A330 flight deliberately booked.
VA switched the aircraft to B737 about a month after booking (the 5 minute flight time change is the obvious cue). But happily they've just switched back in the past few days; likely coinciding with the cancellation of HKG flights.

'The business' v 737 J... no contest really.

Yx on the a330 is also an exit row. If you are travelling with children on your booking it won’t be available to select online, BUT depending on the kids age you may be able to select a mix of Yx And the row in front/behind. This needs to be done over the phone though.

Yeah I noticed 28 was an exit row. With 5 of the kids under 12 this is not really an option for us, sadly.

sorry, to be more clear, it is the ONLY economy x row as well as the exit row, which is why you can’t select it online. This has contributed to a couple of sleepless nights flying from HKG to Aus with the kids.
