Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Yes the outbreak in Samoa was terrible. There was very poor take-up of vaccinations following a previous mishap where a wrong drug was administered leading to several deaths. There was suspicion and wariness of vaccinations prior to the outbreak.
Also measles is highly infectious with an R0 or 15-20.

In the meantime... anyone hear about the 5000 measles cases out of population of 200000 with 80 deaths in Samoa in the last 3 months?

I suspect measles is less newsworthy simply because a vaccine is available and there are steps we can take (or have already taken) if someone steps off a plane from Samoa.

This virus is newsworthy because of the unknown and it could affect us, wherever we are. Not because it is killing people, but because of fear of the unknown. WHO estimate about 700 people die in road accidents in China - every day, that’s not so newsworthy.

ABC reporting "bad internet" on Christmas Island.
Can't be any worse than the mainland.

There is only a poor satellite connection. The Telstra mobile network does phone calls but does not do data At all! There’s no Optus network.

Hopefully their Government will now act responsibly to address that.

There has been a huge Samoan Vaccination effort over the last month (quite a bit of news coverage), with nurses going door to door to immunise people, and families were told to stay home as much as possible if they werent vaccinated.

I was looking at flights to Samoa on a whim, and Qantas site states that you need to show proof of current measle vaccination in order to check in and board flights there - so I think the problem is largely for locals over tourists, and safeguards in place. I always travel with my vellow vaccination card which proves my Yellow fever, MMR, Typhoid, Polio etc vaccinations are up to date, so not too worried about measles as there is a proven vaccine and Ive had the vaccination multiple times (as child and then boosters as an adult), when you have a close family member with compromised immunity, the rest of you make sure you dont put them at risk by getting every jab available.

That said there was an article yesterday (Flight attendant revealed as latest measles patient) about how a Virgin flight attendant with active measles had worked on a SYD-Uluru flight and that NSW health was now contacting those pasengers and people who were at the shops and medical centre in Bondi. Seems every few months someone with measles goes to a shopping causing an alert to be issued.

3AW is reporting that QF94 arrived into Melbourne over an hour ago and no one has been allowed to disembark because of a sick passenger.

Samoa also had to deal with a vocal anti-vaxxer who added to the disquiet over the two deaths.

ScottyFromMarketing has just said that Aussies flying to AKL will be transferred to Christmas Island (pity they won't get SCs for that WUH-AKL-XCH).

Apparently, pax a now off (except 1)

And now "A Canadian man on a flight from Toronto to Jamaica falsely announced to passengers that he had the coronavirus, forcing the plane to return to the airport where he was arrested, police say. "

Coronavirus now found in Princess (Asian) Cruise ship with 10 passengers positive.

That's 10 out of the 31 tests that came back first. Still waiting on the other 242 test results, and they've only tested people showing symptoms and those close to them.

Definitely wouldn’t visit China 🇨🇳 atm it’s better to be safe than sorry , i’d definitely wait until it’s all clear to visit , it’s sad this virus 🦠 is so out of control, sad 😔 for the many that have lost their lives hopefully they can get it cleared

What a Richard Cranium. Lock him up for a couple of weeks and sue him for all the expenses he created.
I'm appalled at the SA citizen who was I'll but got on the plane then went to auctions etc. What a selfish Muppet.
Yet if his behaviour is typical, self-isolation is never going to work.

Better to put them in CI detention.

Just thinking though: there's 270 there now up to day #2. When the 35(?) from AKL arrive they'll be 3-5 days behind group 1 so they'll have to be quarantined separately. Then if there's another QF mercy flight, that group will have to be quarantined from groups #1 and #2.

The logistics are making my head spin.

My office is preparing for an industry expo and we need thousands of disposable gloves and masks.

Having no luck in obtaining supply and the expo is a few months away so its not like we left it to last minute.

We could do without the fruit loops at the moment....

As for the cruise ship, well, it was only a matter of time with weak (if any) implementation of border control in Hong Kong

Maybe I am being optimistic but will we still be talking about this in 2 months in Australia? Shutting the borders with China surely would have contained most of it?
