Norwegian cruise, London, Bavaria and the Maldives

Day 11 had the main stop in Trondheim with a rather early arrival. We were quite tired and didn't get up for the 6:30am arrival. Decided also walking around in the dark didn't seem that appealing. This was probably the coldest we experienced on the trip. Clear skies and a slight breeze. Air temp was around -9 but must have been a fair bit colder with wind chill. We decided to just go for a walk around the old part of town and a quick look at the Nidaros cathedral. Trondheim was also the only stop where the port was a little bit away from the main part of town.

So now seems like as good as any time to give my thoughts about this cruise. In summary, I truly loved it and far far exceeded my expectations.

I'd never been on a cruise before (does the Rotto ferry or Kangaroo Island ferry count?!) and never actually had any desire too. A big boat crowded with people sailing aimlessly did not (and still does not) sound even remotely appealing. So this being smaller and also not too busy must have added to the experience. There wasn't anything overly fancy about the ship, but the food was excellent and accommodation did the job. The staff were super friendly and really knowledgeable.

However, what truly amazed me was the scenery and the beauty of Norway. I loved being somewhere different each day without the hassle of packing up and having to fly/drive. Snow and cold is a novelty and added to the experience for me. I'd imagine in summer it must be just as spectacular and the long days would certainly be nice too.

In terms of the room we had on the ship. In hindsight I'd actually go the same option again. While there were certainly better rooms, none were really that much bigger that the extra cost would have been justified for me. The room was quite and had excellent privacy (as opposed to a room on the deck where people can walk around the outside).

Time went extremely quickly and I'm glad we decided to do the return voyage, rather than just the north or south bound one. If you do have to choose one, I'd suggest the north bound one seemed to have better stops during the day. However, in summer where there is more daylight, the south bound option would be pretty good too.

One thing we might have done slightly differently was booking the hiking package. This includes a set number of the hike excursions and is cheaper than paying for them individually. We didn't do this originally as we really weren't too sure how things worked or what kind of things would interest us.

So to say I love this and really glad we did it would be an understatement.

We had one night in Bergen as the only One World flight out departs prior to the ship arriving back in Bergen. On the recommendation of a friend we booked one night at the Clarion Hotel Admiral. For not too much extra we booked a room that had a view over the harbour.

Disembarkation (or should it be de-shipping if one de-planes?) was orderly and efficient. Our backs came out quickly. The hotel was only a 800 metre walk from the where the ship docked. However, it was over a small hill and come cobbled streets. We toughed it out.

Check in at the hotel was painless. The room was enormous! Well not really, but certainly much bigger than the room we had for the last 11 nights. We dumped our bags and went for a quick walk around the area before it got dark. We walked around the harbour, Bryggen and finally found a spot for a beer with what I can only assumed was the Keith Richards of Norway.

First some pictures of the room and the view from the room.

The next day we had a midday departure to LHR via HEL. We started with the included breakfast at the hotel. The breakfast view was acceptable I thought

We decided to take the airport bus. The bus stop was only a hundred metres from the hotel and no hills or cobblestones this time. We pre-purchased the tickets online. The flight from BGO to HEL was an AY flight operated by a Widerøe E190. We lined up for the J check-in line, but there was only one counter operating both Y and J. There was one person in front of us so minimal wait. There is no OW or PP lounge at BGO.

The sign for the mens/womens was amusing (to me at least)

We were in row 1 which had sufficient leg room for a short flight. We were quite pleasantly surprised by both the size and quality of the meal that was served for what was a short flight. Unfortunately we had a bit of a delay. Some technical issue which was resolved by turning the entire aircraft off and back on again.

The crew were fantastic as was the meal. Even though it was a Widerøe aircraft, the catering was all AY plates, cutlery etc.

We only had a short schedule layover in HEL, but due to the late departure from BGO, we arrived late into HEL. This meant no opportunity to checkout the AY WP lounge which I was a little disappointed about. We headed straight over to our AY A330 to LHR. This aircraft alternated between 2-2-1 and 1-2-1 in J. Ie, every even number of rows on the port side had a thrown seat. I went for 2A and MrsDaver6 in 4A.

This was my first AY experience. Hard product was ok, but pretty old. Cabin crew seemed pretty disinterested . I had the CSM serving my side. She wasn't overly friendly and mumbled when she spoke. Dinner was essentially a rissole which was quite tasty. Wine was pretty average. Having said that, this is orders of magnitude better than BA J in Europe.

We had prearranged with Bats Whitton for a driver to meet us. We were through immigration and got our bags really quickly. The arrangement was to be met 40 minutes post touch down. We were early, bit just as we collected our bags, someone from the company called to see how long we'd be. I informed him we'd be at the designated pick-up point in two minutes. He said our driver would be there with a sign. This was still a good ten minutes before our arranged pick up time.

We exited customs and couldn't see anyone with a sign with our name. We waited where we were supposed to. Nothing. Now about 5-10 minutes post arranged picked up time (ie almost 20 minutes after I received the call), I rang to see what was happening. Apparently our driver was just parking and would be there in two minutes. Hmmm. Another ten minutes he arrives. No apology for being tardy.

Now the interesting thing is he walks us to the car which is the opposite direction to which he walked towards us to meet us. Something didn't add up. Next annoyance was when it came to pay. When I booked, I said it would be paid by credit card. The driver wasn't aware of this. In order to pay by card, he calls dispatch, passes the phone to you and you give your credit card details. All in all, very unprofessional, inconvenient experience. Would not recommend Bats Whitton based on this experience.

Things soon improved. We were staying with friends in Richmond for the first two nights. On arrival, dinner was cooked and wine flowed.

The next morning we walked to Richmond station. This brought back all sorts of memory after spending six weeks staying in Richmond right at the start of my career.

We met at Kettner's for a pre-lunch drink

Then off to L'Escargot for lunch. Obviously we had to try their speciality

After lunch we stopped bar Bar Italia for what is probably the best espresso I've ever had. Worth seeking out when in London.

The next morning we moved to stay with familty in Pinner. My sister in law had organised a surprise birthday lunch for my brother (they don't live in the UK). She had timed it with our time there. Some family from around the world flew in as well as some local family and friends. Lunch was at Pollen Street Social in a private room. They did an amazing job of looking after us.

My uncle who lives in London is a total wine nerd and loves his Bordeaux. We had a chilled next day with some amazing food that he cooked and consumed the wine.

As you have probably guessed I have loved your photos. Thankyou!

Thank you for the kind words. More to come still.

It's actually quite hard just selecting a few. I also struggle sometimes because I know the photos really don't do justice to the magic of the place. Often it's a combination of the view, weather, sounds and smells that make something amazing. A photo is just one dimension of it.
