Is this new, the horrible little ad being constantly presented and changing size at the bottom of a mobile device screen? It covers content and is overly annoying. A further attempt to incentivise paying, to remove ads?

It is a new ad spot – yes, but is not designed as an incentive to get you to upgrade. The truth is more serious than that, which is that the current level of advertising is not doing enough to support the site, so new methods have had to be looked into. It is hoped that this will help support the site better into the future.

Obviously, if you would prefer not to see any ads (including this one), you can purchase a subscription to remove the ads. This also goes towards the upkeep of the site.

I completely...
As an old traditionalist, my concept of a "mobile device" is a plane itself.

But trying to learn - is this something that annoys on a phone app??

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

I completely understand not liking ads, especially ones that get in the way, but without ads this site would not exist. Many sites wouldn't.

Solution
Further to support's explanation, we have also removed some advertisements (eg. the 3 ads between the forum sections on our community home page, a footer ad on the AFF home page). It's all about trying to get the right balance!

As AFF grows and we offer more services, podcasts, and editorial content, so do our expenses. Ads and subscriptions are our primary sources of revenue. Remember, if you don't like seeing advertisements, you can become a SILVER member for just $50 per year (less than 14c a day!) and see no ads on any forum page. You can upgrade your account HERE.

While I completely understand the need for ads, and I completely understand that there is an opportunity to pay for a subscription that will remove the ads, I personally think things are getting a little much... 4 ads dispersed between just 2 comments. Screen Shot 2020-01-17 at 6.56.25 pm.png

Recently the number of ads was actually reduced. But some others may have changed position to more visible spots. Getting the mix right will always be tricky, but it's the price every site pays for having free content.

FWIW, I view the site with the ads turned on too, and probably view more frequently than you do. It doesn't worry me as it once did, you sort of get used to it, and laugh a little as you see ads for things based on previous search terms.

I noticed this on my mobile yesterday. I usually work on my desktop and infrequently use the app. I actually closed it down and went back to the desktop as easier to read without the ad covering the writing. Yes I know there is a solution and yes I am considering it :)

I appreciate the offer of no ads on forum pages with a silver subscription, but if I purchase one, will I be able to effectively use the site while leaving my Ad Blocker and Anti-banner turned on? I prefer to do this for all websites, for security and privacy.

Yes! With a SILVER (or GOLD) subscription, you can keep your Ad Blocker active and you still won't see any ads on the forum pages. :)

Further to @Admin’s reply, obviously if you end up logged out from your account and have an adblocker enabled you will get a pop-up advising you of such, however the login and register pages are exempt from this pop-up so you will be able to log back in easily if you save the link to bookmarks.

I know Ive saved tens of thousands from what Ive learned here at AFF but, embarrassingly , Im not a paid subscriber/member

Just tried to remedy this and got the below message - you dont want my money? 😇

Ads on mobile are really, really bad - they load slow as hell which causes the thread to jump all over the place and regularly means accidental clicks on adds when trying to scroll (guess that's the point?)

The new larger video ad is just ridiculous- it pops up significantly larger than others every time you navigate to another page, cannot be skipped/closed immediately and when trying to type with the keyboard up there is so little spaxe remaining you can't see what you're writing, let alone what you're replying to....Screenshot_20200327-002745_Chrome.jpg

I regularly face the same problem as you. I browse seeing ads and have often accidentally clicked an ad as the page loads. I can assure you though, it is not set up this way to encourage clicks, it's just how the page loads.

I appreciate that you're probably not going to find this advice particularly helpful, but ads are what keep this site running. Without them, this resource would not exist. Hosting, among other expenses is not free.

You do have the option of removing all ads (it looks brilliant with no ads) for a daily fee as low as 13.69¢... that's not a lot when you think about it ($50/year). For a little bit more you get the AFF Supporter banner and discounts on travel products (and while I guess they might not be useful right now, we'll all be flying again real soon I'm sure).

Totally understand that and I'm more than happy to click through on a few purely to assist on that front, I actually find losing my place in the thread more disruptive than hitting the bacl button to exit the ad.

Very much appreciate making this site a free resource for everybody rather than putting all or part of it behind a paywall. It was only this particularly invasive ad that prompted the feedback - not sure how much control you have over which ads are shown but this particular one sucks.

Guessing once I've sorted cancellations for my existing flights I won't be on here too much but would definitely consider for the future when planes are back in the air
