I booked the Holiday Inn at Auckland Airport this morning. It's 10,000 points on PointBreaks, or 5,000 points + NZD48 (which I booked). Usual room rate is around NZD200.

Well ... more like doubled, you cant buy 10k at half proce but the purchase will garner 20k, so (sort of) same ... same ...

I was able to convert 2 bookings at AUD350 all up at AKL Holiday Inn to 20K ... at current purchase rates that is an approximate $200 saving.

Interestingly with one of the 10k bookings (early next week) was NZD360 cheapest cash (had booked for half that).
