Qantas Delays/Cancellations

If a "commercial flight" had an aircraft offering (at a minimum) J and whY classes, it wouldn't be normal for all 49 passengers to be booked in J.

whY was empty.

And while one can't suggest it doesn't ever happen, it would be extremely rare for an interntional commercial flight to have only 49 passengers on a c.240 seat aircraft booked.

One of our aviators pointed out that if loaded to 200 passengers (extra catering, luggage plus our body weight) the aircraft would have made it only to a point such as Fiji.

Rare it may be, but it did apparently have paying customers on board (6 or 8 depending on who you listen to), so it probably technically fits the bill.

Which bit is incorrect?
There may have been some smoke and mirrors involved, but it seems to be correct?

Commercial would imply available to purchase. You could argue it was the first using a commercial airliner, but it’s hardly a commercial flight if tickets aren’t for sale. They may have got around it (“smoke and mirrors”) by carrying (? How many ) paying passengers that were seemingly invited to use it / offered to switch from QF12??? But that has been kept well buried in the details (? Was it a few, one, 10, how many???).

But let’s see it for what it was:
A useful piece for the publicity machine and QF wont rush to correct any errors in the media that are in its favour (i cant imagine many would). And whilst it might technically qualify (who owns the definition anyway.....), the reality is it’s been great PR for Qantas.

If Sunrise didnt take off, Nadi would be a good stopover on the way there but not on the way back (assuming an early morning arrival into SYD)

QF37 tonight currently posting a 2 hour delay.
Reported lightening strike on last sector, aircraft currently in MEL hanger being inspected.
Appears to be either EBP, which came in from SIN this morning as QF38, or EBK, which arrived from PER as QF480 an hour before they posted the delay.

37 posted as cancelled.

Also on Friday 25 October 2019, QF3, the 1915 hours SYD - HNL (normally an A333, though previously a B744) is expected to depart 35 late at 1950 hours with arrival half an hour behind schedule, same day, at 0830 hours.

B738 VH-VXN on QF460 (1830 hours MEL - SYD, in the sky at 1922) should arrive at 2033, 38 minutes late. The 1845 hours northbound has VH-VXF and took off at 1931. Estimated arrival is 2042, 32 late.

Southbound QF804 from CBR down to MEL, the 1805 hours, was airborne at 1904 with VH-VYC. Arrival should be at 2010, 55 late.

A332 VH-EBK looks to have taken off from MEL on Friday 25 as QF769, the lunchtime 1240 hours MEL - PER at 1301 this afternoon so given EBP appears not to have operated anything since coming in from SIN this morning, it may well be the latter.

I wonder if anyone was rebooked on QF45 to DPS (which is a small B738) and then a connecting flight to SIN, or on SQ if seats were available.

You shouldn't need stops on the way over, and certainly not so early as Fiji. The way back will be the longer leg because of prevailing wind....

But, JFK is massively affected by just about anything that happens in the USA. I only did about a dozen flights there, but only about a third were not affected in some way by various levels of holding. In some cases a lot of it.

Perhaps the Brisbane - Chicago flight will in some ways alleviate that, as it will provide a means of replacing a crew that doesn't quite make it. Mind you, they'll both have to be the same aircraft type.

The flight got cancelled while people were still checking in, so check in got halted while it got sorted out.
Most people were transferred to EK405.

That was my preferred option, as it still would have allowed the planned connection in SIN to JL38, but SYD ops transferred me (eventuality) to QF460/25 instead. Which meant finding bags and going backwards through immigration and back to domestic.

QF460 had a 40 min delay due to late crew and a small tech issue in the flight deck (they wanted a light replaced).
QF25 was delayed an hour due to double booking of some seats, which had to be sorted out before the door closed, then the delay from that meant they missed the slot and ATC delayed until an 11pm runway slot.

In further today QF618 MEL-BNE (B738 VH-VYA) had a late arrival at 15 31, 71 min late. This created a further delay on QF627 BNE-MEL which is now expected at 19 37, 62 min behind schedule.
QF4 HNL-SYD (A333 VH-QPI) had a revised arrival at 18 16, 76 tardy.

QF27 departed 6hrs late today departing 19:10 en route to SCL...also the return QF28 is delayed with estimated arrival into SYD 22:30 tomorrow (scheduled 18:00)

Sometimes the predicted times are bettered, but a planned 2230 hours arrival into SYD is risky if there is an unexpected delay in crisis hit Santiago de Chile.

The 1135 hours Monday 28 October QF63 from SYD to SCL ia another delayed B744, with redeye QF64 tonight also set to be tardy.

A333 VH-QPF on QF23, the daily SYD to BKK is predicted to arrive at 1650, 40 late. This flight is the A330 that runs late most often for QFi. In the past :0 days, it has been official late arriving 67 per cent of the time. Uninspiring, especially when the similarly timed TG flight has generally excellent punctuality.

QF79 (Tuesday 29 October, the 0920 hours MEL - NRT) departed at 1141 with arrival estimated as 1952 hours, 132 late. This will delay either QF62 to BNE or QF80 to MEL, both redeyes ex NRT.

B744 VH-OEH is on QF63, the 1135 hours SYD across to JNB that departed 54 late with a 71 late arrival at 1719 the prediction.

I’d expect they’ll preferred to “take the risk” as they can divert to MEL and have the pax connect next AM onto domestic, and it gets the aircraft back in Aus. If they delay departure in SCL they’ll be up for the hotel costs anyway and have the aircraft far further out of position.

In the end it appears it landed 2234 so academic now.....

Tuesday 29th of October sees QF27 SYD-SCL (B744 VH-OEI) with a departure at 14 30, arrival is expected at 12 38, 88 min behind. Definitely not as bad as the previous QF27 service on Sunday.
