Don't like Durian's NM? During my last trip to KL in July, I was surprised to see (and smell) that supermarkets were selling durians:shock:. I wondered what the poor old http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/member.php?u=4349"Mat Sallehs" thought of the smells penetrating through the air conditioning:mrgreen:.

What the durian smell is to Westerners can be compared to the smell of certain cheeses to Asians:mrgreen:

Just the thought of the smell of durian is enough to make me dry retch! Doesn't stop my rellies in Malaysia and Singapore from dangling it in front of me every time i visit.

Though to be fair I did smell something that was worse, didn't think it's possible - stinky tofu in Taipei. :shock: At least the locals acknowledge that it stinks though.

FWIW durians are really popular in asia .... even the Singaporeans had to build a building after it......

They sure have an interesting smell .. no wonder why most hotels ban people from bringing durians to their rooms!

In season, we had a durian stall at the end of our street, so had to go past it at least twice on a daily basis. Very strong smell, but you get used to it. To my lasting regret I never actually tried eating one (been told that they're very yummy).

Durians are known as The King of Fruits (in SE Asia) - maybe because of their fragrant smell?

I have tasted durian on many occassions. The taste isn't all too bad if you have only a small'ish serve otherwise it can overwhelms me..... but dad on the other hand, loves the thing!!! Eats it by the truckload.

I have found them to be an 'acquired taste'. Quite nice in small doses.

Incidentally they have been directly linked to the increase in diabetes in Malaysia

Actually I love durians when the intervals between them are well spaced. You can have an endless debate with a South East Asian to where the best durians come from and what they should taste like (slightly bitter, sweet, custardy, etc). My favourite ones so far are from Ho Chi Minh, but I have not tried the ones from Davao yet!

I think you should approach durians with an open mind and not to expect to puke the minute you try it. I had my US based service trainer in town a few weeks ago and after the obligatory seafood dinner took him to a "Durian Cafe" (yes there is one in Singapore). Because he had no preconceived ideas he thoroughly enjoyed it and asked for seconds!

I am still struggling with the concept of Balot though.

Some of my relatives are big fans of durians. I've had a taste once and spat it out immediately. The thing is like ice cream that's gone bad after having been left in the sun for ages.

I insisted on trying it (and being a lover of durians and century eggs I am far from squeamish). Needless to say I spent 10 minutes praying to the toilet god (puking my guts out!) after I saw the contents

As we are speaking I am having my usual morning fare ( on rare occasions I am in Singapore) - Pi Dan Chok ( or however you spell it) - Century egg porridge, with extra century eggs. But Balot is just beyond me
