Hi All, recently booked flights from Sydney to Paris, through the Air France Website,
a) Singapore Airlines SQ0232 first leg
b) Air France AF0257 second leg.
I'm pretty new to flyer points and miles, but a member of Flying blue of course, befoer I booked.
My question is, since I booked the singapore airlines flight on the Air France Website, I asume they are codesharing? (if that is the right term) that journey. So can I get Flying Blue miles for the Singapore Airlines leg Sydney to Singapore. (obviously I can for the Air France one.)
I am also a new KrisFlyer member, but don't want to have flyer points spread thinly over the globe, preferring to stick to Qantas and Flying Blue if possible.

Looking at websites of both Singapore and Sydney airports, SQ 232 does not carry an Air France code (only SQ 222 has this codeshare). This means you will be on the SQ code, and as such definitely won't be able to earn Flying Blue miles for this sector.

You should be able to earn on KrisFlyer - but the amount you will earn for this sector is relatively small - somewhere betwene ~1950 miles (for most economy fares) and ~7800 (for first class). The catch is KF miles expire within 3 years of earning. The other option would be to open Virgin Velocity account and credit there - miles don't expire provided you earn or spend miles again within 2 years.

Dajop, that was really helpful. Thankyou for explaining it succinctly and without tons of abbreviations which I don't yet understand (and which people around here seem to use as a symbol of their superior intelligence...I admit I just find it annoying.)
I completely understand. So I WILL need to accept that it is going to be Krisflyer points, (we have an account) and I believe my husband has a virgin velocity account, (he's flying too) so we can hopefully transfer them there, I think it's a reduced rate, but better that than expiration. We're going business, so I'm guessing around 5000 points.
You've also clarified what codeshare actually is, I thought it was just one airline doing the others' route, but obviously it's the renaming of the flight number as the other airline's code.
Again, thankyou for your clear explanation.

I would suggest, unless you are going to flying Singapore Airlines (or other Star Alliance carriers) more often, that you open a Velocity account, and both of you credit the points for the Singapore Airlines flight direct to Velocity (they are a partner in the Velocity program). This means you don't lose points on the transfer, and you could also transfer directly to your husband's account, without penalty, so you have a bigger, more usable balance (and then only have to worry about keeping one account active). In addition, you could set up family pooling of "status credits" with your husbands Velocity account, and one of you will almost get Silver status (you would be 10 status credits short of the 250 required, but you also need to have 2 flights on Virgin to achive the status, you can't get on partners alone), if that's worth anything to one of you.

aH. You mean me personally open up another Velocity account? and nominate Velocity points instead of Krisflyer, each gets own, and then transfer mine to my husbands account? That's a very good idea. i will do that immediately, as I have already booked the SQ and can't see us using Star Alliance very often, in deference to Qantas partners and Flying Blue partners.
Ihad no idea they could be transferred immediately without loss of points. GREAT idea.
