"Biggest overhaul in program history" should have read

"More enhancements coming to the Qantas Frequent Flyer"

Seriously folks, has there ever been a change to the program that benefited the very frequent flyer with Qantas?

if I (21 year old) keep up the same rate of SC earn every year without fail

Basic math is if you start from zero you need to earn 3,000 SC for 25 years to get to LTP. No way most people are going to be doing that. Life and jobs change so keeping up that rate is not easy - it happened to me.

A thought,

at 75000SC it would take 20.083* years to make LTP with QF. Given that they have indicated that there will be extra benefits for the status level, and that LTG is the initial year plus 22 years retainign SG + 100 SC, and LTS is the initial year + 26 years of retaining PS + 200SC, the LTP tier is closer to LTP1 than LTP.

I'd say that @JessicaTam is doing it right. Doing LTG with QF and then BAEC is definitely a cheaper than going to QF route
My only disappointment is that QF is offering LTP at such a high level. There are a number of AFFers with 30-40k SCs with QF that are still only half way there. This may discourage encourage those who otherwise would have pushed to get it to look elsewhere.

Edit: typo

While I understand life isn't about round numbers, the trend towards Qantas increasing award/upgrade prices by arbitrary amounts such that award tables aren't as easy to follow as they once were is slightly annoying. It would be nice if they could get back to obvious differences in points between Y/PY/J/F.

QF can't win on here.

It's obvious that the changes were to benefits the millions of everyday Australians with Bronze and Silver status. Judging by the news articles on News Corp and Fairfax they're mostly positive and its their leading headline.

I assume as a high points earner and a forever-bronze, I'll still be well down the waiting list for international business redemptions; unless there's something substantial in the new "points club"?

lifetime OWE status if you average the respective requal for OWE in these programs would take:
63 years on QF
33 years on AY
23 years on BA

I wonder how many lifetime platinums QF will actually have at this level

It entirely depends on flying patterns. To starkly illustrate compare the number of years it would take flying flexible business class from the east coast non stop to PER, return once a month:

QF: almost 33 years travelling from either SYD or MEL to PER
BA: 36.5 years travelling from MEL to PER
BA: 10.5 years travelling from SYD to PER

BA is actually even 'easier' than QF as they dont (currently) penalise earn on partners

Underwhelming announcement in a good way.

LTP is just a token gesture - QF know how many flyers are close or over 75k SCs and I am sure it ain't many. When LTG is 14k there is no logic to justify a whopping 5x multiple for the next tier up.

Fuel surcharges are still stupidly high (and now relied upon by QF to add to their bottom line) and the premium cabin increase in points required make OWE redemptions even more attractive.

If your already halfway it's probably just as achievable as other methods.
If you've just made LTG, other options might look easier.

No @RooFlyer, it's an "enhancement". They listened to what we were saying and put the carrot so far away that most of us won't want to attain it. BA is looking better.

That's my feeling on it too. By raising the bar so high they might actually send a message to members that their loyalty really isn't required and members may switch before they even get to LTG. I know it personally hasn't made my choice any easier. I'm not thinking I'll ever get to 75k and don't want to try, really. At the same time, 35k through BA seems wishful thinking, but it'll still be easier to get to than the estimated 61k to go to LTP with QF.
