Gran class Shinkansen

anything more than a non reserved regular will result in more than 1 ticket. The ticket machines will need to scan all the tickets for that travel. Don’t be afraid to put it all in together into the ticket reader

Yes you can upgrade but I'm afraid it won't be very cost effective. The pass will only cover the basic fare, means you'll need to pay for the Gran Class part of the fare, it won't be just the difference between green and gran.
You can easily work out exactly how much using Hyperdia.
But my advise would be, if you have a green pass, stick with green car...BTW, there isn't a 9 day pass, you might want to double check that.

Sorry, a 7 day pass. Going from faulty memory

Apart from the cost, there's also the little problem that Gran Class is not available in all Shinkansens. Namely the Tokaido Shinkansen tops out at green.
If you tell us where you are going...

Green and Gran are reserved seats only. That means potentially (if full) you can’t get on unless you get a regular ticket (with reserved or unreserved seats) = limiting the trains you can travel on to only those where you can reserve a seat.

You may need to reserve the seats early if you need to travel on a specific day and time

The picture of a regular cabin above was a result of a fully booked Green but I managed to reserve seats in regular

Wow you must be travelling at some peak times.
All the greens and grans I've been on were no more than half full.

Dunno, but we had to be at IIyama by a certain time

Hmm, yes the Hokuriku Shinkansen is nowhere near the frequency of Tokaido Shinkansen.
That gran class pictured above was 8/18 iirc, and two of them got off at Omiya, ha ;)

on way home we got the Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo. We booked that sector when we arrived into Kyoto from IIyama. The Green Class was full in the latter half of the sector. The Nex to NRT was empty

It’s difficult booking forward without a JR pass. Have to attend the train station. So easy to just book the next sector when we arrive after a journey.

Interesting I've never had any problem booking day of or maybe one day ahead. I don't normally buy passes as I like to travel at a slower pace.

JR East you can book ahead on Ekinet.

Tokaido Shinkansen departs almost every 10 mins so in fact using a pass might be the problem as you can't ride Nozomi.

NEX is quite expensive so my guess is locals don't use them. Personally I take either the Keisei bus or Access Narita, only 1000 Yen!

We always slum it in ordinary class.Buy our bento boxes at the station. So no use asking me about green and Gran classes.
