When do points expire?

I read that points expire after 3 years. Would this be 3 years after you earn them, or 3 years from last account activity like QFF?

I understand that miles earned from flying would have an expiry date but would miles earned from partners or even transferred from say Amex still have an expiry date?

As far as I am aware, they have a three year life as well.
 
One reason i make a point to use my SQ miles... i hate to see them expire !

A bit O/T but if the reward program is seperate from the airline, the reward program buys the points from the airline ? or only simply pays for fares ? how would they handle expiry of points in that situation, i wonder who wins there....
