G'day all.
Anyone have any tips on the best way to do a round the world business

SYD-LHR-JFK-MEXICO-SYD?

I'd heard that there was a few offers for around the $6-7K AUD mark. Can't find any firm information on it though.

Any tips much appreciated.

Dave

There are often disocunt RTW fares but they often have restrictions in dates/aiports served etc.

One common one is a Finnair fare that offers RTW but it's limited and may not include MEX, however you may be able to purchase a separate side trip from US to MEX and back into US to re-continue the RTW fare.

I did such last with a Finnair fare

MEL-LAX-ORD, JFK-HEL-SIN-MEL and purchased a separate fare ORD-JFK one way. All up under $7k.

There are a number of round the world fares on the market. The most well known are the ones offered by each of the alliances (star alliance, skyteam and oneworld). eg oneworld offers 2 RTW fares, the Continent based oneworld explorer, which can use the flights of any oneworld member, and the distance based global explorer, which uses oneworld members and a handful of other airlines.

There are also other fares which are more limited. These tend to only allow a small number of airlines, which limits where you can go so may require more extra side flights then the alliance tickets might. The better known fares of this type are sold by Singapore or Finnair.
Qantas used to have a "walkabout" fare that was round the world, but could only use QF, AA and BA flights. Not sure if that's still around.

The alliance tickets tend to be more flexible, but the single airline offers tend to be cheaper with more restrictions.

For originating in Australia there is:

QF - AU-DXB/SIN-EU-CA/US-AU or vice versa with transatlantic on AA/BA
CX - AU-HKG-EU-US-HKG-AU or vice versa with transatlantic on AA/BA
SQ - AU-SIN-(HKG/ICN/NRT)-US-EU-SIN-AU or vice versa with anything crossing an ocean must be on SQ
VS/VA - AU-HKG-LHR-US-AU or vice versa with transpacific VA, transatlantic VS, Asia-EU VS
LH/LX/OS - AU-Asia-EU-North/South America-AU or vice versa with multiple choice of carriers, transatlantic on LH/LX/OS
AY - AU-Asia-EU-US-AU or vice versa with transatlantic on AY
BA - AU-Asia-EU-US-AU or vice versa with transatlantic on AA/BA
TK - AU-Asia-EU-US-AU or vice versa with transatlantic on TK
AF/KL - AU-Asia-EU-US-AU or vice versa with transatlantic on AF/KL, transpacific on VA/DL

Most of these fares cannot be priced online on your own. Some of these fares are also not open to all travel agents, for example BA's one is restricted to agents approved for access by BA.
