How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

BNE - SYD, VA were policing at Premium Entry again, my carry on was 5.5

On the return, with exactly same bag and contents was weighed by QF in SYD. My bag lost 400g and came in at 5.1

Scale calibrations much... :) (unsure who was right / closer to being right!)

What Diet is the bag on.... seriously though I weighed a bag in Mel QF terminal 5.5kg an hour or so later in Syd 6kg. I only had water on the flight. The scales vary from gate to gate and airport to airport.

This is great news and well done Qantas for recognising that 7kg was just too low. Thanks David for the heads up reporting :)

Now queue those complaining about their 11kg carry-on bag only being a little overweight. :)

A sensible decision.

How long before VA fold and match? Hopefully soon.

So, QF finally admit their 7kg OHS-mandated limit was bulls*t ... well of course they won't!! Thinking QF would never back down, I went out and bought a super-light carry-on to keep myself under the 7kg limit. What a fool I was - and in future I'll treat all introduced QF "policy" as a temporary inconvenience.

I've said it before (above) ... the issue was *never* the weight but the size. Will they now turn their attention to the oversized bags (primarily in the Non-Priority line)???

BD

This Qantas line from the AusBT article seems totally disingenuous:

Qantas says the decision follows trials which included weighing passengers' carry-on bags at the boarding gate.
Trial? Yeah, right.

Wait what? 8kg is now suddenly safe? Last week it was a safety issue and now it isn't? That can't be correct. Perhaps QF cabin crew have been hitting the gym and can now manage closing those lockers with a little extra weight?

I mean good outcome for customers, but talk about QF losing all credibility.

Given last week they were weighing them on the fold down latches it was never about the weight. They did seem more intent on size though.

QF has long prided itself on its international reputation for safety.

This little episode will have done nothing to enhance that; in fact, with its most Frequent Flyers, it will have damaged that image through hiding behind the whole safety argument.

The next "safety initiative' will doubtless be open to greater scrutiny regardless of its intent.
Hopefully not the start of the slippery slope for Qantas.

What a great move by Qantas. I will revert to a single bag for most trips rather than the 2 I have been using lately.

I really can't believe the vitriol towards Qantas on this. CASA were all over them, they acted, looked at samples, listened to feedback and came out with a pretty good compromise in my opinion. I like Qantas no doubt but have also strongly disagreed with some decisions or "enhancements" in the past but this seems like a win for common sense.

As a side note, on Tuesday I was in 4C PER-ADL, was one of the first off and the bags were coming out on the carousel as I walked to the hire car counter. If every airport was this efficient perhaps checking bags would not be as bothersome.

... but this seems like a win for common sense.

It is (a win for common sense). But the is is why it had to be such a problem in the first place. Given 10kg is considered 'safe' on Jetstar (and up to 23kg on other airlines), why did QF have to subject their passengers to needless (mindless) checks and inconvenience?

If CASA were all over them, why not come out on day one and say '14kg - any way you like it'?

Presumably CASA just say, write some policies and procedures, and enforce them.
I'm pretty sure the airlines can't change this stuff on a whim, and there would have been quite a study and documentation process around it.

Sure, not going to argue about the process/decisions, I do not want to defend the Qantas process.

BUT....I am happy with the outcome and think common sense has prevailed which isn't that common in Qantas' recent past.

I'd prefer it if the new rule was:

Total of 14kgs carry-on luggage, with no single piece to weigh more than 10kg. Limit of one piece per over head bin (i.e. enforce the size rules for bins and ensure the 2nd piece goes under the seat, excepting exit rows of course).

I should be able to have 2 * 5kgs bags, as long as one goes under the seat!

WRT checked bags I also wish the rule was 23kgs checked (with no single item to exceed 23kgs). The other week due to having to bring some work kit i needed to check two bags, lucky QC gets me a second free checked bag, otherwise even though combined weight of both checked bags was only 12kgs, I would have had to pay for a second bag.

Sure. But let's assume that was the case... QF could have announced they are preparing a new cabin baggage policy but it will take two months to get regulatory approval. In the meantime passengers will have to comply with the 7kg limit.

These things are all about commuinication.

Strangely that situation wouldn’t have been an issue internationally (bar the USA) where they have a KG system for those flights
