So I put in a request for 2 J classic rewards seats to be released for QF34, KIX-SYD on September 28 a few days ago.During that time there was an interim booking reference.Earlier today I got an email to contact the centre, who advised that there were no seats available. EF shows 9 across all fare buckets.

Should I try again or accept that I won't get those J Seats?

Change the Point of Sale (POS) country in EF to Japan and see if it still shows same fare availability.

Edit. Scratch that thought. I just tried w both Japan and Australia as POS country (USA is default) and it all showed the same. Was just a thought bubble.

Hmmm - interesting, given that I'm only doing MEL-PER.

It's the same with cash fares. Do a search MEL-PER and look at the prices of QF9 vs the pure domestic flights. You'll see the difference there as well.

Maybe request QF26 HND-SYD instead and if it gets approved, buy an ITM-HND JAL explorer pass for ~$100 each. Earns 10 SC, JAL will check through on separate tickets, and you'll get better lounges at HND.

I actually preferred to take the QF26 as I'd be in Tokyo anyway, however QF 34 showed better availability across the the buckets and better odds, or so i thought.

got some seats to/from the US today, not my ideal routing - got rejected on some better flights, but got a combination that (just) works

2 x F SYD-LAX departing late Sept ... as a P1. The release came through immediately. The return flight 2 x F LAX-SYD was sent up the chain for approval. Will need to call back on that one.

Very happy to report the return request has been approved. Today I was thinking it would be good to push on all the way through to JFK, that's been approved in the last 30mins. Now waiting on a request to release JFK-LAX-BNE .... if that doesn't come through we'll just buy a revenue ticket and come home F via SYD.

The LAX-JFK will be our first 787 flight and probably doing it in the best cabin on a US transcon

Very happy with QFF at the moment!

The WP ability to request award seats is probably the most valuable feature of the tier.

Best cabin on a US transcon would have to be AA Flagship F A321. 1-1 config, less passengers, more personalised service.

I've done AA A321 F .... I wasn't that fussed with it. You can see comments and photos in a TR link in my signature.

Although I haven't stepped foot on a 787 (outside of a QF tour back in 2012), I reckon the new J cabin will win on all fronts.

If sharing with more people is better, then by your logic, economy is the best!
Passenger : FA and passenger : toilet ratios are an advantage
Hard products are similar - footwell, all aisle access, lie flat bed.
Can argue all you want about soft product - highly variable in F and J.

We all like different things... just wasn't my cup of tea.
