The speeds via various speed test websites are download speed from the server you choose to ping. It does not indicate the line speed that your internet line is capable of.

If you have FTTN/ADSL/FTTC you can also interrogate the modem and find the line speed.

IMO getting a service with 4G back-up is probably really only warranted if you are in a Fixed Wireless area, as there is known congestion in some of those areas. In metro areas on a fixed line technology like FTTP, FTTN, FTTC or HFC if you are experiencing congestion change RSPs (its likely their issue), and if you are getting an unstable service you need to ask your RSP to raise a ticket with nbn and also look at factors such as in home wiring which could be the route cause.

The two main reasons for outages are:
1. planned maintenance - 4G could be handy but since very rare, you could just tether to your mobile during this time or
2. black-out/power loss - where 4G backup wont help, unless you have a UPS to power the router etc - again may as well just use the data on your phone during the power outage.

FYI nbn dont call end users to advise disconnection, the only time you will get an SMS or call from nbn is to:
a. confirm install time (only after your RSP would have already sent to you an appointment via email or sms); or
b. and sms link to customer satisfaction survey after an install.

nbn dont have your email address only the mobile number supplied by your RSP as the contact if they need to do an install.
 
4G failover has reatricted speed of 6/1

What’s your NBN tech?

It took 6 weeks to get NBN to actually connect our property, so the 4G backup was awesome as we were online from the day the modem was delivered. Didn't have any issues with speed and could watch netflix etc.

We had previously demoed the house and disconnected the FTTH connection, but in their system supposedly we still had a physical connection so there was no way we could order a new one once we finished rebuilding. Try getting them to change that in the computer... Had multiple techs come out, oh NBN need to run the cable underground to your property first...connection get's cancelled in system as tech visited and no can do. A merry go round of ridiculousness but we got there in the end.
 
FTTH meaning fibre to the premises?

Yes. I had to pay NBN to remove the original fibre connection which was overhead. New one was done underground at my request for zero cost. Builder just had to provide conduit to the boundary. Had conduit run to our comms cupboard and all worked out nicely in the end with fibre running all the way in to comms cupboard. Very glad our suburb got done before FTTN came in.
 
NBN workers have been around my local area readying for a June 'availability date'.

On Saturday 19th, at 6PM there was a notified service outage for landline for up to 6 hours.

Last Thursday 24th, it came back on, > 110 hours later. :mad:

It seems the NBN 457 dudes managed to cut a main cable (According to the Telstra tech who found a 'new pair' for us, it appears to have taken them two days to admit to having done so).

We did get to enjoy ~26Mbps 4G in the mean time.:cool:

Now our ADSL2+ had gone from a solid (i.e. consistent) 5.9Mbps to a variable up to (at best) 3.9Mbps with occasional complete drop outs. :(

Cleveland (Qld) has no 5G and the 4 G is rubbish to poor.
We are however about to receive NBN FTTK (yay) , however still no date for connection.
We have vague promises of a date in the first or second 1/4 .....
