Qantas: 'one of the worst airlines in the free world'

SFO777 i agree with you on the 717 Y seat.just as well you didn't get to test the Y seat on the 789.Nine across and so narrow.
And you are too kind on Neil Perry's salad. As i keep saying green leaves do not a salad make.
And you got one of QF's better breakfasts..
On the other hand I really don't care if a plane has wifi or not because i am a grumpy old curmudgeon who loves being out of touch for 12-14 hours.

Had to laugh at the OP use of the expression "free world" That's rich coming from a citizen of Trumpsville.

To suggest SQ crew are all 'robotic' is not true, especially if one makes the effort to say 'thank you' sincerely to them, or even better, talk to them about the flight, their layover or other matters.

A common frame of reference helps. Once you find something in common, it makes it easier to talk to them. If the conversation leads them to find out I have lived in Singapore for some time, usually that leads to a different interaction than I get as a standard caucasian (from who knows where).

But of course (and generalising here) Singaporeans are trained from early education to follow rules (often blindly), and of those who don't, they wouldn't make it into SQ in the first place. Hence the robot like appearance. It is nice though not to have to invest trying to make a personal connection to get a decent level of service - unlike certain other carriers - where you notice those having conversations with the staff getting preferential treatment. Sometimes you just want to isolate yourself and chill for a journey.

Please explain.

You may find that people in Australia aren't as vehement left/right as in America (where it's almost like a sports team).

This was definitely a tongue in cheek comment, as are most Australian jabs at the yanks. Don't take it too personally.

There are a lot of generalisations being thrown around now like "SQ FA's are robots" or all QF is bad because of [ X ] or whatever.

Let's be fai rhuh? I've had brilliant interactions with SQ Staff, and I've also noticed aspects of "robotic" service - more in terms of he rule following/training.. that things are supposed to be done "this way' and onl this way. That doesn't have to be a bad thing.. it all depends on the situation. I absolutely appreciate when individual staff (be it SQ, MH, EK or QF) can add their own little bit or make things just a little more personal.. and we've all that had I'm sure. Definitely Singapore is one of the most regimented (rule based) societies and they follow them with very little dicretion. A pro of this is a place where there's a high level of personal safety and that I feel totally fine about walking the streets late at night etc (unlike many other places) whilke a Con would be the lack of perhaps ability for many to step outside and use some common sense when it comes to some "rules" but again that is a stereotype/generalisation and totally unfair. Like saying all Aussies are Bali Bogans or all Americans are hicks with no education.

QF staff, even at the senior levels I am certain, like most of us vary in their outlook, commitment to the company culture and/or customer service and goals. Many personally go above and beyond (as we all know) while some well.. we all have bad days. That's pretty normal for most large customer service focused companies. Alan Joyce has definitely run QF as a for profit company and his emphasis has definitely been on the bottom line(oh god, no jokes there please!).. the company has also gone hrough some difficult periods aslong with the good. Personally I am not a fan of his style in terms of taking from the staff in many respects, the whole "shutting down the airline" standoff with the unions and all the rest, but he has also given solid results, and outdone VA in a fiscal sense IMHO. I also feel Dixon and then Joyce missed the boa on the 777 and the 380 was probably the wrong choice for the airline, but the investment in the 789 is solid and there's "progress".. for me a mixed bag. I do think it's time for new views and a new direction though. That's just me.

And finally back to SFO777's lovely wife and pictures and so on. That's fine if she has veto over photos of her online etc... because she has a say. I still come back to some of the photos involving groups of people, like in lounges (specially the young lady eating in one shot!) if they were given an opportunity to say yes or no to their photos being used online. Yes, in public people have no expectation of privacy interms of photography and the like - I understand this (although lounges could be considered private property, but that's a whole other issue).. I just feel it would have been more appropriate to either blur faces, or aim for shots that do not show so many lounge users close up. That's just me.

Wow, this thread is still going, on and on? LOL. Love all the entertaining comments, both pro and con, but especially those from the QF fanboys and flag-wavers that believe QF is the best airline in the world and can do no wrong. Even those from the ex-Chief Pilot that apparently would rather fly in a 30" pitch seat than in comfort on any airline with a crew that doesn't look like him. ;)

Some additional thoughts on your beloved national carrier. Have at it. :D
Economy Exit row on QantasLink 717 is more comfortable than Business Class.
Are BNE's domestic and international terminals in the same time zone?
OK, so QF 789 Business Class to LAX is not "one of the worst in the free world" but it still doesn't have Wifi.

More hyperbole? We're qantas fanbois if we dare to point out the obvious and blatant errors in your report? Or perhaps we can call it fake news?

SFO777,

If the complete TR is as accurate as the comments and misquotes in this post then it has gone to losing complete credibility IMHO.

Y’all is either for us or against us. Black and white. I think Aussies are very much into grey. Can see good and bad in most cases. And I think this thread has pretty much demonstrated that too. Can’t actually see too much fanbois stuff here.

When did anyone say QF is the best airline in the world? Can you quote an individual post that suggests anyone believes this as you suggest? or that QF can do no wrong? Come on. Be serious.

Seems to be a bit of a common theme in some comments:

started to scan through the report... I feel sorry for his wife who has her face plastered over the internet (and who has this look of weary resignation about the whole thing). Couldn't be bothered continuing as far as the contentious bits as there are simply way too many photos - can't see the forest for the trees........

To be honest I could not be bothered reading it all. Too much info.

Seems its way too much of an effort or bother to read the original trip report on Flyertalk, or indeed the entirety of this thread, but then an opinion is offered anyway! So these posters don't have the time to read the trip report, but have found the time to criticize the author of the trip report without knowing what the content of the trip report is...

OK, let's just cut to the chase:
Yanks down under - 'Over-sexed, over-paid and over here'

c'mon let's not turn this into another sort of generalisation and bashing people or cultures.. specially the ones under the yoke of the Orange Hampster :p

Cheeto Benito
Agent Orange
Mango Unchained
Borderwall Personality Disorder

They write themselves.

I think the point is being made is that one could easily be forgiven for thinking that's the general opinion of QF fans... they are genuinely willing to overlook anything.

The list of reasons to dismiss anything negative about QF is extensive - anything and everything including from drooping beds on the A380, the 'new' suites on the A330 now being second generation, no PJs on day flights, stroppy crew, angled beds still flying around, under-catering or lack of choice by the time they get to row 3 on a 737... just a few of the things that QF fans seem to be able to explain away.

The only thing that hasn't been dismissed? Glacially slow meal service - no one seems to be able to argue in favour of that! :)
