On a recent MEL-SYD flight with Qantas, I requested a cup of black tea. The tea supplied had a distinct coffee smell, evidently from the jug having been previously used for coffee. A new tea was requested and supplied.

Now I love a coffee, but there are times when I just want a cup of tea. This is not just Qantas as I have encountered this on other airlines and on cruise ships. Surely in this day and age it should not be too hard to separate tea and coffee jugs? Interested in other views.

Qantas and most other airlines don't serve coffee. Its available from Bunnings as paint stripper:eek:

^ This.
Although I have seen a photo of an interior/galley area for J service semi-recently with an automated machine which might do OK-ish coffee (ie. one of the ones which grind the beans).

Tea is easy because you can use lawn clippings or some weeds by the side of the tarmac or something & it’s all good ‘cos it all (un)tastes the same. :)

I avoid tea/coffee in airplanes, since I read and seen some videos/articles that airplane water are disgusting :(

Oh wow. I just looked into this. On two occasions this year I was sick with a stomach bug (vomiting) maybe 12 hours after flying domestic. I always wondered if it was a weird coincidence. I generally always order a tea because it comes with my bundle. Now I'm wondering if that's why I'd sometimes get so sick after flying...

Thank you so much for posting this. This will be a real game changer for my ordering process during flights from now on.

The only time I use water from the plane is to wash my hands after the toilet. Even then I use hand sanitizer when I get back to my seat

Coffee on planes is not something that I would prefer as the quality is not great, plus as people have suggested, may bugs that you can get from water utilised. I rather have it on the lounge where there's proper barista coffee.
Even internationally, I usually prefer skipping on coffee and have the hot chocolate. Now, that should be an option for domestic!

I choose not to drink either on flights these days but I definitely see coffee in the jug marked tea and vice versa regularly.

Same same. I refuse to touch hot water on a plane after getting horrendously ill after drinking coffee on a Jetstar international flight.

Yes, avoid the coffee and tea in-flight, aways.

I am always pleasantly surprised that airlines manage to produce reasonable cup of tea.

Getting it right is simple but easy to mess up.

I suppose the airlines make it in the jug with water straight from a boiling water unit in the galley then brewing time as it wends its way down the aisle.

Don’t get me started on those American restaurants that serve a cup of warm water with a tea bag on the side. (its too late then).

I think the OPs point is that regardless of the quality, the pots should be identified as being for tea only or coffee only.

Would be an easy mod to introduce on the next order of pots.

Reading this I realised I have actually never had a coffee on an aeroplane. Ever. Would never cross my mind! But I am a self confessed coffee snob.

Tea - yes, Sri Lankan have some lovely varieties to choose from.

Avoiding the issue of health and safety ... I’m a tea drinker, including on planes.

For the Black Tea drinkers out there, If you ask the FA nicely, a slice of lemon can usually be arranged to enhance* your drinking experience. ;)

* enhance -referring a literal sense and trusting that lemon slices are still offered onboard.

While never outstanding quality I've never had a problem with coffee onboard. Perhaps the Jamesons helps kill any bugs.

That said, I'm not at all surprised they'll mix up the jugs every now and then.
