Leave if you’re not happy, Qantas CEO tells Qatar Airways in response to Oneworld exit threats

  • Airline chief Alan Joyce’s comments come amid deepening dispute over Gulf carrier’s expansion into Australia
  • Qantas says destinations lost because of row with Qatar Airways can be replaced thanks to pact with Emirates, Air France and KLM

“If aviation was governed by the World Trade Organisation, there would be some dumping cases against people for going in well below cost to force people off routes and markets. We think those rules should apply to aviation markets,” he added.

Would it be fair to say that this is almost what QF did when Virgin entered the local market?

Slippery slope that argument. Virgin entered in the market in 2000. I can't remember if QF did this back then, but if it did it worked out really well for Virgin as it destroyed AN in the process and eventually gave Virgin half of AN's market, whilst taking the other half for itself.

Sounds like one CEO likes to regularly threaten to get his way, and another CEO has called his bluff.

One relies on payments from his backers to keep flying, the other's airline flies because its making profits.

QR's fares really aren't all that cheap from AU, either in economy or business. Not sure where the article gets the $1000 business class fares from Europe to Australia - I think they meant that for economy, and that's certainly not cheap.

As I recall, it was after AN departed and QF tried to bleed Virgin by offering very low fares for some time. I believe it cost both of them a packet and a truce was declared eventually.

QR and no doubt Qatar itself are all (in my opinion) all painting a false economy in the lead up to them hosting the World Cup. After which, there will be tears aplenty.

"Among the big draws for travellers on Qatar Airways are its low prices for long-haul destinations, particularly in business class, often as low as US$1,000 for a return ticket between Europe and Australia."

?????

Edit: Already noted by MelT above.

The ME3 (i.e. big 3 middle eastern airlines) subsidy debate has been around a while, but can't help but think that the UAE carriers and QR are in different leagues altogether.

EY? Clear that the tap has been turned off.
EK? Expansionary, and measured, and lots of fine tuning and adjustments (eg reduction in PER, elimination of trans tasman) suggests that the tap has a valve restricting flow. Being coupled with FlyDubai, following similar approach to QF/JQ, IB/VY, LH/EW, SQ/TR.
QR? 7+ hour flights on a premium carrier to destinations like DAD, CNX, KBV and PEN. These are interesting routes, but commercially viable?

Yeh, you are right. In timing terms I think it was more after the VA transformation, where they moved in on QF’s patch. They seemed to coexist fine when VA was just DJ.

Mr Joyce should shut up because at least Qatar flies out of Adelaide and I can use my points with them

You can also use your points with CX, EK and MH?

Im with VPS. Emirates seem to have dried up a bit and it’s that awful non flat seat in J which is where I’m saving points for. QR is sooo much better. CX - not seeing a lot of availability for my searches for next year. MH - nup.

What's the fixation with VA? I tend to recall a number of competative attempts that QF assisted in sending to the wall by bleeding them dry.
