Aldi commercial - Pointless Points

I regularly receive a Coles “spend minimum $50 a week for 4 weeks, receive 10,000 points” offer.

10,000 points can be used to buy $50 of groceries at Coles.

So the simple formula is $250 worth of groceries for $200. Or a 20% discount.

Then there’s the regular points earn on top of that, and special points earn (eg triple points offers etc) and discounts from using gift cards.

I'm off to BWS in the next day or so for $40 of "wine" - it'll come with a bonus of 2K woollies points, so an effective $10 discount or 870 QFF, whatever is decided.

Another account has a $95 spend on beer offer for the same $10 or 870; the jury is still out on that one.

I really like the Aldi advert but they don’t have a store near us so I go there about twice a year.
I am a Points and gift card junkie so no need to rush to one of their 35 stores in WA.

But Cove if you do get to Aldi you will be surprised at some of their unusual products like pate, chocolates, brioche etc..but just don’t expect to find them on the shelf next visit.

it's not hard to create a spreadhseet to calculate the actual cost of contriving points for flights.
I'm very happy to pay $1300 for a J return to Europe and will continue to do so as long as it lasts

I find Aldi as expensive as Coles or Woolies, with a very limited range. Not sure if it's just around my area!

Now I just pop in when I'm already in the area to see what non-food items they have (love my aldi thermals). Oh and my favourite trail mix! (cranberry, white choc, almonds .... no nasty sultanas or peanuts in that one!).

I think the aldi ad is quite clever. Its aimed for the budget shoppers etc not necessary to points or rewards chasers. It will be interesting to see the effect of the ad on aldi as well as woolworths and coles bottom line, especially in areas where aldi is close to one of the majors.

Do the majors respond with more points offers or xmas ad where shopper swipe cards and get the shopping for free.

I have also seen people not have cards and spending lot of money

I did read article recently re qantas frequent flyers over year period where 43% were savings points , 20% used for flights but interstingly 12% used the store. Not 100% on exact figures but thats a lot of people using store.

Oh don’t worry, the big two are buying your data from elsewhere if you aren’t beeping on their own systems. This is bought through banks, telcos, social media, pay tv providers, utilities etc that sell your data to ‘data house’ that then resell to anyone who will pay.

I know WoW collect a lot of data (given they own data companies) from elsewhere but I see no reason for data on what brand of toilet paper and how often I buy milk to be collected.

I recall one of the Flybuys 'year in review' emails putting me in the top 3% in points earn (courtesy of $50x4= 10k promotions).

For someone who has a relatively low grocery spend ($40-$60/wk) its crazy that most households aren't extracting much value of it. So I can see where Aldi is coming from.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A ½¢ per $ commission absolute minimum.

I value the earn much more than that and am OK with being profiled.

I've never bothered with FlyBuys because i only spend $30-60 a week on groceries, as I spend a lot of time travelling or dining out. If I were to bother, what would I reasonably expect to gain, given you cant convert to QFF points?

Similarly I've never used my Woolworths card as Im lucky to spend $10-15 there every 4-5 weeks - basically only make the effort to go there if I cant get something I really need elsewhere. I had Woolworths as a client years ago and have always been appalled at how terribly they treat their back office/corporate staff and their attitude to suppliers, especially their treatment of local farmers.

I rarely used cash for anything (except the odd restaurant in Chinatown that wont accept cards) so 99.9% of every dollar I spend is on points earning credit cards. Big believer in consolidating earn, so Flybuys being standalone doesn't seem to offer anything - happy to be corrected.

With $40-$60/week spend and staying disciplined you'd be able to earn quite a few points.

I generated ~$350 worth of Flybuys points in less than a year but buying gift cards sent the spend target soaring to ridiculous levels.

Wifes Flybuys account just started and offers alternating between $50-$60 spend but have not had the multiple week promotions yet.

All Flybuys points have remained in Flybuys as I'm not yet convinced Velocity redemptions are good value even after transferring to SQ and that's going to be devalued even further in New Year.

The base earn in both programs is very poor. Spend $200 and we'll give the equivalent of $1 reward.

Compared to my favourite program Peri-Perks, I agree with you.

However the $10 reward for 2000 points is the standard for Woolies, Flybuys and Myer One it seems, hence why you have people who try and game the system.

In the month of Nov, with 5000, 2000, 750 ect offers, Ive received over 15,000 points for not much $$, which is about 10K Velocity points, enough for a J domestic upgrade at least or $100 Coles spend.

Don't forget that by linking your Velocity account to your flybuys, you will receive a small number of SC each month which can come in handy.

I bought a Qantas ticket... I'm not sure there was value for money in the domestic J ticket I bought... but I did buy it under DSC ;)

It was certainly cheaper than using cash.

This is exactly the same method i redeem my flybuys points - a cash fare on QF that still earns QFF points & SC.

As someone not interested in chasing Velocity points - this makes shopping at Coles just as worthwhile as shopping at Woolies for QFF points.
