If there is already a general grog thread, please merge.

I noticed this, but not sure if the Vodka is nice or not or whether this represents good value (approx. AU$37). Can anyone assist?

It's a really average vodka. Sure, there's more of it, but at best it will be hidden in a coughtail. But don't expect amazing taste to dollar ratio. But cheap.... well... It takes up valuable space in your bag. One bottle of similar quality locally is around $28.

It’s a bit like Gordon’s Gin or Bombay Sapphire these days for Gin. Once the go to spirit but now with the explosion of more boutique brands, best confined to coughtails where it’s simply a base ingredient vs being the hero.

I learned that 40% vodka is a must as you can wake up in the morning without a headache. Ukrainians and Russians seem to know this.

Yes there have been certain shortages of products for sale in places like the Ukraine. To their credit they know how to “ home brew” and distill vodka for home consumption.
I do note the average Russian drops off the perch at 67 so maybe not so good for health.

Would be good to use this thread ongoing for posts of good value duty free.....

I did like the taste of the vanilla vodka that the Albany WA distiller makes probably because I like vanilla.

The Polish too

And yes this thread should go on.......at least in spirit.........

As for Vodka I don't ever go past the black bottle of diamond rye Vodka made by Belvedere,

I cannot believe the taste. I mean they serve Belvedere in QF first but this is a notch above it.

So it it is on special I am flying international

I started the thread as I noticed we have wine, gin and whisky threads but I couldn't see one for odd bod grog. I know the prices of my regular choices, but have no idea about the others, so I figured anything alcohol fits ... Duty free prices even better!

Oh now that’s a good vodka.

Also, Hartshorn vodka made from sheep whey. Best vodka I have tasted. They do a gin too.

Are you able to taste the difference in vodka? I struggle to detect any difference between Belvedere, Grey Goose, Finlandia, Stolichnaya or Smirnoff.

Almost the same gin with Tanqueray, Four Pillars, Beefeater, Hendricks, Bombay Sapphire or Gordon's.

It could well be that I'm not a regular drinker and prefer to use mixers.

Even with mixers, I can still certainly taste the difference between a more premium Gin & Vodka, so when the time arises I'd rather spend $60 and enjoy it then 2 x $30 bottles of Smirnoff red :p

Can anyone suggest a premium Canadian Whisky available in Australia? I do like the bit of sweetness you get in Crown Royal or Canadian Club, but sometimes it gets a bit too sweet, so I was wondering if there was another brand out there that others have tried and liked?

when in mixers you loose the subtle taste difference but as I said the Diamond Rye Black Belvedere bottle is step above the rest

I'm even getting fussier about my mixers with my gin - no point having a lovely gin and then a sh!tty tonic

Same! I’m loving the Mediterranean one from Fever Tree.

Mass produced mainstream gin is all very same same in terms of flavour and minimal to distinguish between them. There is so much variety in the boutique ones as it all turns on the botanicals used - hence why I have 5 different bottles at home!
