How to (not) remove your phone number from your QFF profile

It seems for all its $1B + profit and $11M CEO, QF still can't afford a tech team for their website with basic programming skills.

Have switched to the NBN and decided to cancel our home phone number to thwart nuisance callers. So today I tried to delete my (supposedly optional) home phone number from my QFF profile. Should be easy to just delete the number and update, right? Wrong!

When you "update" you get a message to enter your area code and number. The system refuses to accept a change without you entering a number. So you can't have a blank field in an optional box. Can't even populate the field with my mobile number. WTF?

Can't you add your mobile number as if it was a landline? I think I have been able to do that in the past. +61 04 (as the area code) then xx_xx_XX in the phone number cell.

Try adding the area code as 04?

Mine looks like this the fist 4 numbers of the cell are in the first field i.e. 04XX then the other 6 are in the other field.

Have got it sorted - because the "61" country code was there I dropped the "0" at the start of the mobile number (as is usual for international numbers). I see that it works if you include the "0" in the "area code"
Thanks for the heads-up - although the fact still remains that a supposedly optional field isn't actually optional at all.

Maybe make this a sticky thread with the title along the lines of "How to change a phone number in your QFF profile" - I bet this is going to be a reoccurring problem/question?

Amateurish implementation by QF IT there, although I suspect a lot of people accidently worked out how to do it by trial and error. A couple of extra lines of explanation or an example on the web site may save hundreds of phone calls to the QFF call centre but I guess thats "too hard" to do.

I wish Qantas (and almost everyone else) would simply STOP "enhancing" or "refreshing" their websites and just spend the next ten years hammering out all the glitches.

I've learned something new today - that mobiles have an area code, even though it's of dubious value to have an "area" which is no more specific than "Australia". Isn't that what the "61" country code is for?

Back in the 80s long before the whole of NSW had an 02 code the, 04 (actually 046) area code was for Campletown/MacArthur region.

When mobile phones became a thing, all of NSW moved to 02, freeing up 04 for mobile operators; and we all go extra digits added to our landline to go from 6 to 7 then 8 (so the now standard 10 digits including area code).

So yes 04 is an area code, just not one tied to a geographic region. Before mobile number portability the 04 ranges belonged to specific carriers too i.e 0411 and 0412 were Optus, 0407 was Telstra.

On any site that insist on a landline i just enter my mobile with area code of 04, then put remaining 8 digits in the number. I just wish all sites accepted international format so +61299999999 for landline or +61499999999 for mobile.

Agree about the dubious value. All it does is fit mobile phones into the same format as landlines.
