Additional baggage, excess baggage, allowances | Qantas AU

So the above eludes to some level of discount for online additional baggage - does anyone know the rates BKK > SYD and HKG > SYD? I don't have a booking, but its a factor in my decision on airline and route. Need to take an additional 42kg of luggage. Y + platinum gives me 50kg, need 92 kg total.

Seems silly that you must have a booking to see the prices. EK for example shows you it on their baggage calculator website, 600usd for 25kg on BKK > SYD.

Hey Fifo,

Reading further down the page it does say you can only buy up to 35kg of baggage in advance, so given that you'll be up for $245 on top of whatever you pay in advance ($35 * 7kg).

Is it possible to do 2 trips, or even ship some of the luggage down in advance? For how much excess baggage will cost, you could probably afford to book another flight instead of paying excess and would be able to ship it down for far less

I saw that but it also says: You can buy up to 35kgs per transaction up to a total of 100kgs.

So I should be fine there.

No, I'm actually coming from DOH - considering talking RJ from DOH > AMM > BKK as they offer luggage on piece concept and with OW plat I can get 92kgs by flying economy.

Hmm....fedex does 25kg flat rate boxes for 210usd BKK > SYD. Maybe it's worth overnighting in BKK and fedexing stuff.

I'm still interested to know the qantas excess prepaid rates.....

Here's what I am quoted for HKG-SYD as a WP flying in J...

(I've got the 60kg allowance and +1 is SG with the 56kg allowance)

Honestly I doubt those figures are correct. Just Qantas IT at it's best.

You could fly a friend to Hong Kong and come out a good $4k ahead of those rates.

You get their luggage allowance, they get a free holiday. Win win.

Since the flight is originating in HKG and should be priced in HKD, most likely it's showing prices in HKD. Not an IT issue.

Also if you actually go through the booking process you can see the costs for additional baggage. Those prices above are in HKD.

Nice one thanks. Still at 637usd for 35kg, ridiculous. I wish Australia would get some laws or what ever it is that means USA is all piece system.

Not sure what the extra piece charge would be but there are usually two rates with any airline - the lower rate being flying 100% with that airline and the higher rate being for multiple airlines in the journey.

If you are flying RJ DOH/xAMM/BKK you're probably better off having a totally different pnr ex BKK (or HKG) to SYD on QF as having the RJ flights (or any other airlines) in the same pnr as the QF flight, even if on two separate tickets, will generally prevent you from purchasing your QF excess luggage at the discounted pre-paid rate as the system will tell you your journey is ineligible for pre-paid luggage and you must pay at the airport.....at the much higher rate.

As you are OWE it's possible RJ may allow up to 32 kg per bag on the piece system (like AA in the USA) for the DOH/xAMM/BKK ticket although I don't know for sure. Then when checking in for QF it's multiple pieces up to the total baggage allowance. Make sure you take a print out of your baggage receipt.

Just to throw something else into the mix, if RJ permit through checkin on separate tickets they may well be able to add the QF BKK/SYD flight in as oncarriage at DOH and tag your bags all the way to SYD.

A couple of potential hurdles are the maximum amount of hours in BKK in transit for baggage to be through checked eg it may be only if your transit in BKK is under 12 hours. The 24 hour rule pretty much just dictates being able to transit at a city without it counting as a stopover for ticketing purposes.

The other potential hiccup could be that the RJ checkin system may want to charge excess when the QF flight is added as oncarriage and the RJ checkin staff at DOH may not know how to (or have the authority to) waive this despite the fact that RJ is the the most significant carrier so the piece system should apply for the whole journey.

If RJ won't through check you could then purchase the extra allowance direct with QF but check when the cut off is for pre-purchasing at the lower rate as you don't want to burn your bridges and not be able to do either.

Plan is two pnrs, rj doh amm bkk.
24 hr lay over, fedex 50kg home for 422 usd.
Bkk syd qf or ek.

I highly doubt that rj would thru check or sig carrier rule would apply. Id get screwed over im sure.

I think this is what my luggage on rj would be....although not 100% sure

Have you considered booking a comfort seat instead? See this post which indicates that you get luggage allowance plus status benefits for the comfort seat as well. If you have 50kg yourself, a comfort seat will get you the extra 50kg you need, plus the added benefit of the empty seat beside you (and the points and SC earn as well).

As you don't pay the taxes, I think you will find the comfort seat (even for a one way) cheaper than the FedEx to freight the 50kg, plus your gear flies with you.

Ill be honest, dealing with qatar airways on anything but a routine reuqest is a nightmare.

Gaurantee youll never get the sc and points to credit for the extra seat. Even if they were offered

For musical instruments they state you dont get the points or sc for qr. Likely for comfort seats too.

I read that entire thread. There is a poat im may 2012 saying that free baggage for a comfort seat was discontinued.
