Powders are now being restricted on-board international flights.

From Cairns Airport website:

Powders: From 30 June 2018, all international departing flights will have restrictions in place limiting inorganic powders to volumes less than 350ml per passenger in the aircraft cabin. Passengers will be required to present all powders in their carry-on baggage separately for screening.

It is from Government.

But if it is such a security risk allowing powders on board why is it delayed until July 1st and what makes domestic flights free from the risk?

Is this a US thing? Are there changes on the rest of the planet?

What an absolute joke! I thought there was some talk that with the new scanners the LAGs rule would be relaxed! It is going from bad to worse!!

Assuming the reason for the ban is about biological 'agents' , then it's useless. 300ml is quite enough!

Well, it’s all about security. Mention security and we don’t jump but ask, how high.

What would x-raying powder achieve?

powders do not need to be carried in a clear resealable plastic bag: just place the containers directly onto the X-ray tray, just as you’d do with your laptop and ‘LAG bag’.

So which kinds of restricted powders are people most likely to get caught out by this rule?

I can't imagine people having too many kinds of powders with them, and most of the others are organic ones.

Talcum powder and makeup would seem to be the prime candidates.

Packing protein powder? Stow it in your checked luggage, says US TSA - Bloomberg News

The US Transportation Security Administration plans to add another item to the gels, liquids and laptops requiring additional scrutiny for U.S.-bound airline passengers – powders.

Passengers carrying more than twelve ounces (340 grams) of powder – the size of a regular soft drink can – will be subject to additional screening starting on June 30, TSA spokesman Michael England said. Such items include certain cosmetics, spices and powdered drink mixes.

Similar rules apply to passengers departing from Australian international airports from June 30.

Under the new policy, all powders must be presented separately for inspection at the international security checkpoint. This includes everything from cosmetics – such as powdered foundation, blush and other similar items – through to baby formula, ground or powdered coffee, sugar, spices and more.

The policy was enacted partly in response to a foiled bomb plot on an Etihad Airways plane flying to Abu Dhabi from Sydney in July, England said. He added that “improvised devices containing powder explosives have always been a concern of TSA’s.”

In order to avoid authorities disposing of the powder-like substances, England recommended that passengers place any powder products inside their checked baggage. Powders in carry-on bags will be discarded if screening procedures are unable to effectively resolve them.

What about - protein powders, creatine for us gym goers? People dieting and on meal replacement powders? Baby powder?

We worked with a makeup artist on a shoot in the US several years ago. She had it all packed in her checked luggage and when she arrived in Miami, discovered that a number of items had been lifted after being rifled through: her usual pristine packing was a mess, and to say she was p***** off by the thefts is an understatement.

She's thankful that she had insurance, but one has to wonder how this might effect an increase in insurance costs.

According to Travelsecure, they're classified as "organic" and therefore exempt.

Surely now is the time to make a new 'word' with the four initial letters of restricted items?

Maybe GLAP? Or GALP? :p

My GLAPs were thoroughly inspected. Or gulp, the person in front of me forgot to pull get their GALPs ready and held up the queue.

Good to see that only inorganic powders are affected, so cocaine is still fine. :D

Skynet has read your post. Prepare to be rubber-gloved when next you travel...

My goodness, you’re going to get more than just rubber-gloved. Quick, delete, delete. :D
