Direct flights to Vietnam announced
Direct flights from Port Hedland to Vietnam have just been announced, opening up destinations across the globe from Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam Airlines will start flying from Hedland to Ho Chi Minh City every Saturday from September.
People will be able to start booking flights in two weeks and will need to go in to the new travel agency that will be set up in the Pilbara Photographics store in South Hedland Shopping Centre.
The in-store agency will be able to arrange flights, packages, visas and all other documentation needed for the trip, so booking online will not be an option.
The new flights have been organised by Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce president Peter Carter, who is excited about what the new option will bring to the Pilbara.
“There’s so much potential in this market, Vietnam is screaming for fresh produce so these flights won’t just be for passengers, we will be sending Pilbara and Kimberley produce straight to hotels in Asia.”
People will be able to use Ho Chi Minh City as a base to fly elsewhere in the world at a far cheaper price.
Local travellers can expect more direct flights in coming years, with plans for flights to Auckland with Vietnam Airlines from March, 2019 and Shanghai via a yet to be disclosed airline later in 2019.
“I made a commitment to myself to get seven new airlines flying in and out of Port Hedland within the next five years,” Mr Carter said.
Port Hedland International Airport general manager Rod Evans said the flights were not driven by the airport, but supported the move.
“We have the ability to facilitate international flights and are always ready to work with airlines to accommodate new flights in and out of Port Hedland,” he said.
