Direct flights to Vietnam announced

Direct flights from Port Hedland to Vietnam have just been announced, opening up destinations across the globe from Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Airlines will start flying from Hedland to Ho Chi Minh City every Saturday from September.

People will be able to start booking flights in two weeks and will need to go in to the new travel agency that will be set up in the Pilbara Photographics store in South Hedland Shopping Centre.

The in-store agency will be able to arrange flights, packages, visas and all other documentation needed for the trip, so booking online will not be an option.

The new flights have been organised by Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce president Peter Carter, who is excited about what the new option will bring to the Pilbara.

“There’s so much potential in this market, Vietnam is screaming for fresh produce so these flights won’t just be for passengers, we will be sending Pilbara and Kimberley produce straight to hotels in Asia.”

People will be able to use Ho Chi Minh City as a base to fly elsewhere in the world at a far cheaper price.

Local travellers can expect more direct flights in coming years, with plans for flights to Auckland with Vietnam Airlines from March, 2019 and Shanghai via a yet to be disclosed airline later in 2019.

“I made a commitment to myself to get seven new airlines flying in and out of Port Hedland within the next five years,” Mr Carter said.

Port Hedland International Airport general manager Rod Evans said the flights were not driven by the airport, but supported the move.

“We have the ability to facilitate international flights and are always ready to work with airlines to accommodate new flights in and out of Port Hedland,” he said.

Is that some kind of joke? Can't book online. have to go into a shop in South Hedland? Yeah, this isn't going to last long.

You have a reasonable size town in KTA. Perhaps some of those folk might be interested, but they'd need to have a 5 hour round trip drive just to buy the ticket!

And finally, unless someone in Vietnam lost a bet....why would anyone there want to fly to Port Hedland?!?

I wonder if members of council happen to own the TA...!

Once a week, catering to specific group of workers on 14/7 rosters who then spend the break at a cheap destination.

Possibly also inbound workers on similar rosters.

This is indeed a random route! And why on earth would they not allow online bookings? I assume this will be an A320 (or similar) service.

The article does mention that freight will form a large part of the service. That part makes sense.

The article also mentions that Vietnam Airlines is launching PHE-AKL flights next year - surely this can't be right?!

(Well I just checked and it's not April 1...)

That would definitely be an even more random route!

The article does mention that it is a charter. So I expect a lot more PHE driven than VN.

Mr Carter told the Telegraph on Monday a deal to charter an Airbus A320 or A321 from Vietnam Airlines was close but had not yet been confirmed
