Have an opportunity to fly either the 359 or the 77W to Hong Kong then New York.
Just wondered if any member could give an opinion on the seats?
I've heard all the stuff about 359 and Dreamliner being better for jet lag but have flown both and can't really feel the difference.
My principal query is re: the seats/bed - which one do you prefer and why?

Many thanks

D

Since you said bed, I'm assuming J?

359 is slightly better. CX have made minor tweaks to the same seat.

I would take 77W for ultra long haul, roomier cabin & proven aircraft - 359 offers no benefits apart from the cosmetic seat changes in J

There are still plenty of defects being worked out on the 359s too (defective restrooms, seats etc)

I asked this question in another thread but not about business class.

Is it worth trying the CX 777 in economy? It will be BNE-HKG just after midnight. Sleep should be possible easily but not sure about comfort for that length of flight.

Other options would be QF A330 earlier in day or QF 747 via SYD again earlier in day but both require hotel stay.

CX's 359s had some initial problems with their interiors (wear and tear) although they're working on that now. Just avoid seats 11DG. Because of their position right at the front of the cabin (in the galley) they're pretty much universally recognised as the worst business class seats flying!

The 359 has a tail cam, and minor tweaks to the seat like a wrap-around leg-rest (extending right up the side of the seat to give a bigger shelf when either relaxing or in bed mode). The 359 also has a lower cabin pressure, supposedly to arrive refreshed.

The 777 is noisy by comparison.

I'm not sure if the A350 has personal air vents though. Which could be a deciding factor.

Your capacity to sleep in Y, JohnK, is the stuff of legend on this forum! Alas, not for me. I made a vow about 6 yrs ago to never set foot in a Y cabin again (long-haul) even if it means paying full retail! So far I've been lucky.

When travelling ? I thought CX had A350’s on that flight. If it is the 777 watch out for seating configuration - CX are retrofitting some of their 777’s with 10 across in economy .

Early June for the HKG lounge crawl. I had a quick look and appears to be 777 and availability on QFF.

Mrs C and I flew MEL-HKG on A350 and HKG-MEL on 777 in J a few months ago. The seats seemed identical to me, the A350 was slightly quieter, both cabins seemed spacious, but I slept like a log on the HKG-MEL 777 leg (daytime flight) after finding the Finnair J seats much less comfortable to be able to lie flat and sleep from HEL-HKG.

I'd not be fussed which ever plane I flew in - the service was identical (and exemplary).

I look forward to seeing how you get on as we have the same flights booked in September/October.

OT but we used a SQ 359 J a couple of weeks ago and I was seriously underwhelmed with the seating.

I’m on that CX flight this Saturday morning (Friday night). Isn’t is the 359? In any event I’m in Y+ but given I find not much difference between Y & Y+ I will let you know my opinion.

SYD has the 777 flights (and thankfully still all 9 across), but according to ExpertFlyer, the 00:50 BNE-HKG is always operated by 359.

Yes it is a 359. I must have seen the SYD flights with a 773.

I know what it's like on a QF A330 in economy. Not sure what a CX A359 will be like. I'm guessing similar to SQ A359?

Anyway QF BNE-HKG is 28,000 points + ~$163 and CX BNE-HKG is 35,000 points + ~$177.

Why the difference in fuel surcharges between QF and CX? Oh Qantas how you love to rip people off.

Agree the SQ 359 J seat is a huge disappointment but I actually managed to get my feet in the cubby without too much hassles (180cm)
You will be able to report back to me!! I'm not flying CX J until next April....

At 185cm I was OK too except for being angled off at about 40 deg the whole way.

I found Y+ ok but as I have previously experienced on QF I am still unable to sleep any more effectively than in Y. The recline felt better than QF if that’s something people rate. Food was only average. My position from when I flew Y+ from LAX-BNE on QF in 2016 remains that on an overnight flight I would not pay the extra $ over Y due to no real improvement in sleep.

What is the wifi like on the CX 359? Usable?

The answer is very useable. I was able to surf the Internet, send WhatsApp messages etc with no problems at all. Very impressed.

Can confirm it does not have personal air vents in J!

I have just done 2 sectors on it in J and can't say I was at all impressed. I just don't get why airlines don't think personal air vents matter - they can make such s huge difference to comfort! Also don't think the seat holds a candle to the QF A330/787 J.

Apparently it's a cost issue. Expensive to install :(
