Hi all,

Hoping for some advice regarding a day room in Sydney. Flight will be arriving from LHR just after 5am, so expecting to clear formalities before 6am. Next flight won't be departing until 6pm that evening. I'm hoping to find a day room for a while to clean up and snooze before heading into the city for lunch. I've tried googling day rooms for Sydney airport hotels but they all seem to indicate that day rooms aren't available until after 8am. Has anyone had any experience with trying to find a very early (~6am) check-in for a day room near the airport?

Appreciate any help!

For clarity, the curfew is 11pm to 6am.

Rooms are a bit of problem and you'll get slugged I think. You might have more luck trying a hotel in the city. Where are you heading after you day out?

That is what I thought too, but how do you explain the 0510 arrival of BA15?

Heading to WLG. Need to drop into the city for something, otherwise I'd try for an earlier flight.

The change in daylight saving, I don't know, it would be BA that need to explain as it's law, the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995.

Quick Google search indicates there's exemptions :)

Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995

the Act provides for international passenger movements between 11pm and midnight and between 5am and 6am (the curfew shoulder periods) subject to
  • jet aircraft meeting the strictest ICAO noise standards (Chapter 3)
  • no more than 24 movements per week (no more than 5 on any one day) between 5am and 6am, which may only be landings [quota set by Regulation]
  • zero movements between 11pm and midnight [quota set by Regulation].

I have fond memories of many red eye flights from PER to SYD where we ended up doing loopies over Sydney while waiting for curfew to lift because we made (too) good time. When I booked the BA flight and saw the arrival time, it raised an eyebrow, but figured there was a reason for it.

At any rate, anyone have any suggestions for my day room dilemma? :)

I won't land before 5am and will use 34R.

When on QF8 DFW-SYD last December, the pilot came onto the PA with an update on our arrival advising that we were ahead of schedule and that ATC will be slowing us down for an arrival after 6.00am due to curfew in SYD. So we flew around for a while. That was on a Friday morning.

A certain number of landings are allowed before 0600.

Maybe they already used up the weekly quota before our Friday flight?
Straight from the act.

(9) These are the quota requirements that apply to landings between 5 am and 6 am:

(a) during a week, the total number of landings of international passenger aircraft at Sydney Airport that occur between 5 am and 6 am must not exceed 35, or such lower number as is prescribed; and

(b) the total number of landings of international passenger aircraft at Sydney Airport that occur between 5 am and 6 am on a day must not exceed 7, or such lower number as is prescribed.
