Confirming that Warner is out for the 4th Test Match! Is Langer flying to Jnb as well ?! :)

Spotlight on Warner as probe continues

Edit: Aaah, I can see a Daily Telegraph article that's behind a paywall...but it doesn't confirm it.

Langer - YES!! He's a tough nut and I think exactly what the team needs. No nonsense and he'll crack a couple of heads together ;)

The fallout for Smith continues: Smith relinquishes captaincy of IPL club

"Rajasthan Royals will do everything possible to protect the values and the integrity of the game," said Manoj Badale, co-owner of Rajasthan Royals.

"We agree with Steve's decision to step down as captain, and we are fortunate to have such a capable successor with Ajinkya Rahane.

"It is important that all cricket fans retain a balanced perspective on the situation. What happened in South Africa was clearly wrong, especially given that it appears to have been premeditated.

"That said, this will be a difficult time for Steve as well, given how much he cares about the game."

and

"Smith captained Rising Pune Supergiant last year and was set to lead Rajasthan in 2018 after the franchise returned to the competition after serving a two-year suspension over a corruption scandal.

Both Smith and David Warner – who stood down as vice-captain in Newlands – were retained by their respective franchises for A$2.4 million to make them the equal-highest paid Australian players in the IPL.

Whether Smith’s fee will be reduced now that he’s lost the leadership remains unknown. "

I'm sure he and Warner will drop pay...

Socceroos discussing it and saying what a bad time for Australian sport.
What did they think they were doing. I can’t get past that.

Time for a bit of distraction.

Sorry it is behind a paywall: Below is an extract of article:
CRICKET

As Paine rises, Langer could be fast-tracked for Lehmann

Justin Langer could be fast-tracked in to replace Darren Lehmann
Cricket Australia has hinted at its immediate plans by appointing Tim Paine as acting captain and has the option of fast-tracking Justin Langer into the coaching position if Darren Lehmann’s future proves untenable.

Lehmann took over when Mickey Arthur was sacked ahead of the 2013 Ashes, but is under pressure as investigators began their examination of the events leading up to the ball-tampering scandal.

Steve Smith, who has been suspended form the final Test by the ICC, stated the coach was not part of the meeting at lunchtime on the third day at Cape Town where the plan to tamper with the ball was made.

Lehmann was involved in the move to hide the evidence when he was filmed by the local broadcasters relaying a message to Cameron Bancroft in an apparent effort to inform him that he had been caught in the act.

Wider questions about the side’s culture after an ugly tour where their behaviour has been widely criticised will focus to some extent on Lehmann.

CA wants to appoint Ricky Ponting its T20 coach and has had its eyes on Langer, who has filled in for Lehmann, for some years.

Well, it seems clear that Warner is set to take the fall. He may deserve it, I don't know, and it might also be the best way of limiting the fall-out to other players.

My uneducated guess is that Smith will receive the same formal punishment as Warner, and that Smith will then be allowed to make his way back into the fold. I doubt Warner will ever represent Australia again. That can all be handled informally.

So many twists and turns. Looks like that line in the sand is becoming clearer.

Cheating at cricket just one of the unthinkable things Aussies do now

Also in the Guardian this was noted;
Cricket Australia set to wield axe over ball-tampering scandal – live!

some interesting thoughts emailed in from Ian Forth on cricket as religion, and its symbolism in Australian life:

Cricket has turned from a sport to a ritual in Australia. The team song with the wattle, visiting the graveyards in France, and of course the Legend Of the Baggy Green. This coincided with a time that the team were all but invincible, so, practices became sanctified, and indelibly associated with outcomes. (Hint: note how monotheism emerged in the Old Testament).

So when Michael Clarke tried to head off before singing the song he was nearly throttled. The Baggy Green became a sacred item - literally; Steve Waugh wore one that was battered beyond recognition. It was a holy relic. The G was referred to as ‘sacred turf’.

That’s right cricket became, to all extents and purposes, a cult. Or a religion, if you prefer.

Trouble is that if rituals are transgressed condemnation is wild and fierce. To Australians cheating at cricket became blasphemous. The only fitting punishment for such impiety becomes excommunication.

It was easier when cricket was cricket. Not forced to do double duty in binding a fragile society, forever unsure of its place in the world, together. Smith, Warner and Bancroft are now going to be taken to a place outside the city walls and ritually stoned.

Some thoughts on current status.
  1. Sutherland still has not yet spoken to Warner
  2. Nothing is done to the ball without a bowler knowing about it especially if a change in tactics is planned
  3. Warner’s contract with IPL is still valid
  4. The coach didn’t know apparently, why not?
  5. Smith needed a great coach and mentor. He didn’t get that from Lehman. He will need significant after care.
  6. Ironic that Maxwell is now back in the team. Who would have thought that 6 months ago
Maybe I’m a bit older and have cricket in my blood and also by marriage. Cricket has been a major part of my life. I gave up enough time to it. And in my day partners/wives/spouses were regarded as a necessary evil, someone to wash the clothes. We certainly didn’t get to travel with the team but that’s now the way it is down to state level.

Many many people rushed/rushing to trial, judgement and punishment without ALL the information. Media went into a complete frenzy.
CA just needs to complete investigation without being pressured or rushed and announce its findings.

Thats why in a Court of law, comments on a specific case before the courts is usually not allowed

There is no due process anymore. There is a new Court in the Land and its not in Phillip St Sydney, or Lonsdale st Melbourne

But they did admit it straight up. When people plead guilty there is no trial.

Irrespective of what the plea was, not all the facts were known and agreed upon before trial, judgement and punishment.
Yes there was a trial - by media
And Judgement by the media
Due process? Nope.

This isn’t a court of law. It’s a high profile corporation. Their rules within the realms of contracts/employer/employer.

Im not saying there has to be a "Court of Law AKA Lonsdale or Phillip St" process but a media led frenzy trial, judgement and punishment is not the way to go either.
Whatever the "Court" there should always be Due process - all corporations know that intimately.

CA tried to provide it, but were lambasted by the media and the like of Karl Stefanovic because they did not get the answer they wanted at the time they wanted.

I suspect though that eventually Lonsdale or Phillip St may come into play.

Life’s too short to spend much time worrying about what people say in the media. And it’s very easy to get by without hearing what Karl has to say.

CA look to be handling things OK to date if you only look through all the noise.

Rushed justice will see little mercy, but we must show some mercy.

Even with terrible crimes beyond reasonable doubt, there's usually hope of parole and release

I fail to see whys we hold cricket to higher standards than we do our misdemeaning parliamentarians.

True if looking in, but if caught up in the frenzy there is no way out

Well, we never have liked politicians, we don’t hold them in high esteem, we don’t grow up practising to be a politician and we don’t play backyard politics. We only watch politicians on TV because we have to.
