‘I am doing what I coughking want to do’

Finally someone gets penalised for this stupid behaviour! Good to read that he has been banned from flying QF.

His crime -

He started drinking around 50 minutes into the flight, and — when told he wasn’t allowed to drink his own alcohol on the plane — downed the two drinks in front of the flight attendants.

He then poked a female customer service manager in the shoulder and took her intercom handset, and tried to prevent her from contacting the pilot.

When his flask was taken away, Taylor said: “I am doing what I coughking want to do.”

Classic not taking ownership of his actions -

He told the court he was a “really nice guy” and said he couldn’t remember committing the crimes, claiming his behaviour was out of character.

He blamed stress and the medication for his outburst.

Violent Qantas passenger to pay $26,000 for flight disruption
A violent passenger who forced a Brisbane-bound Qantas flight to return to Perth after he mixed Xanax with alcohol has been ordered to pay almost $26,000 in fines and reparations.

Luke Macdonald Taylor, 39, was aggressive and repeatedly swore at Qantas crew members during a flight on July 19 when he was told he could not drink alcohol unless it was supplied by staff.

"I'm doing what I cough**** want to do," Taylor said.

Can't see anything about being permanently banned from flying but am hoping that is included.

....threatened crew members, attempted to punch a male flight attendant and tried to bite an Australian Federal Police officer....

Yikes! If only this guy stuck to one or the other (medication or booze) and not both.

I had similar a few years ago where we made an unscheduled stop in CNS on the way back from BKK. Think he got away with a good behaviour warning that time.

Its the last line of the article that I found.

It states that he is banned from flying QF. It doesn't say if its a temporary ban or lifetime ban.

Is there a persona non grata list that automatically beeps when someone tries to book a flight with them?

Hes screwed if the extended family lives on Lord Howe Is, he'll have to swim.

I have very little time for people acting like this on a plane. I know some people don't travel well and there are people with medical / mental issues however a flight is not the place to interfere with crew or equipment. You behave like this then there needs to be consequences. I'm not sure of lifetime ban if this is only time / out of character but a 5-10 year ban with reinstatement with understanding conditional on never creating any kind of problem again (even low level).

Being a fly in / fly out worker I guess will really stuff up his future work options.

Ha ha ha, funny stuff!

Oh, I missed this point. Esp if QF have the contract with his current employer (or maybe now his former employer).

It appears that he had very little insight.

It’s no use trying to paint a nice picture of his characterwhen a bad picture exists. This suggests a lack of insight. Without insight it’s very difficult to reform.

Harsh 25year ban. To lessen that he has to demonstrate insight, remorse and a change in character. The burden of proof of a changed character is his and is a necessarily high standard of proof involving a significant period of time. Maybe not 25 years but significant.

I don't agree that it's harsh. The incident was very serious and the penalty is IMHO appropriate.

If he tries to reduce the time penalty then I hope his contrition is required to be demonstrated by full payment of the monetary penalty as well as exemplary behaviour in all aspects of his life.

Almost half of that money is to the court. Cheap diversion.

Hat would have been the true cost of returning to PER and then arriving late to BNE?

Would other airlines place similar bans like pubs and clubs ?. Has this happened before

Be nice to see some compensation flowing to the other passengers. Those who sat quietly in their seats, politely did as asked and were rewarded with being three hours late into Brisbane.
Perhaps three hours wages at FIFO rates? Let's see now, 212 passengers (or would that be 211 into BNE?) x 3 hours.......

You could only sue for actual losses and you will have to pay the lawyers even though costs may be awarded. Not worth the angst.
Totally agree. Would never happen. I was simply having a muse. The court gets $10k for a few hours work, Qantas gets $15k to compensate for fuel and aircraft time but the real cost is 211 passengers losing three hours out of their lives and they get nothing at all.
Perfectly normal situation for flight delays but it's interesting to contemplate, when the delay is specifically caused by one person's deliberate behaviour. Wouldn't it be a surprise; a cheque in the mail from Qantas saying that they had deducted the direct costs from their compensation and were dividing the rest amongst the passengers!

Dont forget to take Qantas' and lawyers expenses (net of court awarded costs). I suspect what's left over is not much.
Qantas giving passengers money. Will never happen unfortunately  because Qantas takes money doesnt give and because it would not want to create an expectation the next time

I get sick of hearing people blame something or someone for their bad/criminal behaviour ... the one punch idiot who blames his girlfriend because they had a fight, the airline pax who blames anxiety and drink, the wife beater who blames his father, the continual drink driver who blames the hotelier, it's all rubbish and it's time people accounted for their actions and society hold them accountable for their actions. Great news article. I hope the ban sticks.

Agreed.

And many offenders that say “not to mitigate the offending but to provide some context” is just as lacking in insight or remorse

However if said offender later shows insight and blames no one else then he should be given a second chance. Proving insight and remorse is very difficult - the burden of proof is necessarily high and necessarily requires the tincture of time - years.

Hence the Andrews govt saying that all is now well because they have repaid and won’t do it again has not satisfied the burden of proof that they are insightful and remorseful of their actions and by their change of character over time, it is clear it won’t happen again.

Essentially these clowns need to go away and demonstrate over a long period of time a proof of a change of character.

If anything, it doesn't go far enough. Think about the staff and passengers that had to go through that ordeal. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the crew required counseling.
