Oversize cabin luggage - check it in you &^^#&&*'s!!!

Of course this type of occurrence can only become more common as people try to cram whatever they can into a carry-on to avoid the cost of checked baggage.

The proverbial two edged sword!

Except this generally occurs with people wgo have NO CHECKED Baggage.

I agree with most of what has already been stated. Some people need a swift kick to the head when trying to lug some of their luggage in to the cabin. I often look at morons in disgust with what they bring on board. No respect for anyone else!

I think it's unfair to pick on 'suitettes' because 'suits' are just as bad, often with laptop bag, roller-bag and suit-bag.

My rule is if I'm not gonna use it on board, which is 99% of the time on Domestic flights, then it gets checked in. Other people need to follow this rule as well I reckon.

I think the easiest rule the airlines can enforce, without having a frame, is to simply only allow 1 piece of hand lugguage per person. Surely that would solve half the problem. Often it's not the size, it's the qantity. Parents travelling with babies are an exception of course, or those with special needs..

Whilst that might work for you it may not work or everyone. Travelling has it's irksome activities - for some people it is overhead space and for others it is people jumping up to the loo every five minutes or trying to start a conversation - I would not want us to come down to the lowest common denominator - a silent cabin where no-one moves , no children are allowed and we are only allowed a small transparent bag to travel with.

It would be nice if the airlines did follow the rules and allow the correct amount of luggage - that I would be happy with even it inconvenienced me a little.

My next trip could be quite light on hand luggage as mrssimongr has already indicated that we will not be travelling hand luggage only...

Of course QF could help the situation by having Priority Tags that mean exactually that. First off.

To an from Brisbane last weekend, with tags, the first priority tag I saw was bag number 18 at Brisbane and no 22 at Melbourne on return

My point was that people who currently travel with checked baggage will be encouraged to join the hordes who travel WITHOUT checked baggage, thus exacerbating the problem.

Normally I have little or no carry on baggage however last month I during a SYD-BKK-SYD trip I had my large laptop backpack AND large camera bag due to work. There was no way I was going to check in my delicate gadgets so carry on they became. The camera bag was ok but the oversize laptop backpack would need a lot of forcing to fit in the cabin.

I think aircraft should be designed better with more internal storage for the 'bigger' lives we lead today. With carriers looking to discount for no checked in luggage surely more people will start trying to squeeze more stuff into the cabin...

They already are. It's called the cargo hold. Lets not impinge on the already limited cabin space. I do understand and support your relectance to check anything delicate/valuable though.

Clearly it's up to the airline to monitor and enforce this, but I was under the impression that carry-on was restricted (size, number and/or weight) for safety reasons?

I'm resigned to the fact that a Business or Priority sticker means very little these days on QF. From my experience, I'd say they come out first out about 50% of the time.

When you think about the number of inconsiderate pax that fly with excess carry on in Australia, this is nothing compared with domestic flights in the USA. Its a wonder some pax can fit down the aisle because they are carrying too much, and I don't mean a large carry one, I mean something the side of really large backpack and then one or two other bags as well. When I travel domestic in the USA I try and get the window seat to avoid being hit in the head by these inconsiderate persons who want to take everything onto the plane to avoid checking. I hope the airlines do start to enforce the rules, because I haven't seen it being enforced so far. I am back in the USA in August and have five domestic flights on AA so will see what happens. I am in F class so will make sure I an one of the first to board to alleviate any problems, and while I am on a rant, why don't the FA's stop passengers putting their carry on bag/s in the first available overhead when they enter the plane and then walk to the rear of Y.

Thats bad luck, my hit rate is more like 90%. Of course it should really be 100%!!

Actually I've really noticed this over the last few months, maybe I've being getting on the planes earlier due to knowledge that space is limited (I take on very little). As a WP I'm usually in the first 2 or 3 rows in Y and the last two flights I was one of the first in those seats and my small bag was the last to make it easily into the overhead bin (actually a little bit further back than me).

You should have seen the look of the next 10 people coming into generally empty seats but nowhere to put their bags :( I than watched iiregular travellers (no status on tickets and looked new to travelling) just go for business overhead or even pushed other overloaded bins around at the front. They then happily walked to the back... mission accomplished:!: Later arriving pax then had to have they bags taken down the back instead reversing the trend, and sometimes wasting attendants time since this shouldn't have happened.

Anyway agree about people taking 2, 3 and 4+ bags onto the plane being a problem but let's start with putting your bags somewhere near were you are sitting. I've only seen this enforced once in business class with a Y pax who was most upset at having to walk his bags a little further back.

This is the problem with the interweb - people google "easy travel tips" and come up with hints from people to stow their gear in the J overhead so they can "get one over on the man" rather than finding useful site like this...

This sort of disgraceful behavior should be reported to FA's immediately.

My experience with priority luggage has been very good. Most times it is one of the first batch of bags on the carousel. Maybe I am using up all my good luck on the things that do not matter in life....

JK - things that matter in my life...

1. My dog not barking at me when I finally get home...
2. My wife not calling the cops when I walk inside from an extended stay away ( ;) )
3. Getting home to find I still own that house!!
4. My driver being at the airport waiting for me as I exit the secure area...
5. My luggage having yellow tages (or J) and being within the first few on the belt
6. Crown lager not being sold to the Kiwi brewers...
7. Parking naz_'s leaving my BeeMa alone even if I'm 5 min's past due...

Mr!

My priority tagged luggage can come off last at the carousel everytime if any of these events were true
  • Good health
  • A +4 golf handicap
  • Able to travel to Thailand 4-6 times a year until I have had enough
  • St Kilda wins a grand final soon
  • Manly wins a grand final soon
  • A good job, actually any job as long as the pay is good
  • A +4 golf handicap

What do you like so much about Thailand that you want to travel there so often?

What do you like so much about Thailand that you want to travel there so often?
The weather, the relaxing atmosphere, the golf courses and as I do not need to drive a car I can drink all night.

I can have a 2 week holiday in Thailand including airfares, accommodation and 8-10 games of golf for around the same cost if I was going to Perth or Cairns. Overpriced Australia with bad attitude or value for money Thailand with quality golf courses at a fraction of the cost. Easy choice....
