It may not belong in the 'wine' thread, but ...

Just arrived Brazil and had to order a caipirinha of course. Its in a bit of a fancy establishment, so I was immediately put in my place. The caipirinha and cachaça menu was produced:

I suppose its a bit like ordering a whiskey in Scotland ...

Last time I had one, it was in Rio, 20 years ago when a driller and I went head to head around some bars. I think I lost; that night and the next day or so are complete blanks in my life.

Does anyone have any recommendations for cachaca?

I've browsed Dans, and they have quite a few different ones, but the reviews are mostly negative. One reviewer said to check out a brand called Saturno instead, which you can get from Spirits Direct.

My (Brazilian) wife and I typically drink Sagatiba as the most easily accessed in Australia. The standard one is easily accessed in DMs, but see if you can get the aged one. Some DMs have it I think, but otherwise can be ordered from Nicks
Sagatiba Velha Esplendida Cachaça (Cachaca) (700ml) - Cachaca (Wood Aged)

Kind of annoying, because cachaca is <$5/bottle in Brazil. I'll typically get SWMBOs family to bring multiple bottles when they come over.

Ypioca is typically what we drink in Brazil (and hence what we get them to bring back)
Ypioca Prata Cachaça (Cachaca) (700ml) - Cachaca (Wood Aged)

Great, thanks for that. Yes, quite a few reviews on Dan's make a point of saying cachaca is $5 in Brazil!
