I an looking for a one way flight from New York to MEL for June 2018 (Economy). The one way prices seem to be about the same as a return ticket. Does anyone have any tips for a better price? Creative routing could be OK.

(One way because I will be there after a cruise)

Putting in an arbitrary date in June Skyscanner shows $822 (one stop QF) or $721 (two stops Delta/ Virgin Australia combo)

An exact date would be helpful as airfares vary considerably. In June I'm seeing as low as AUD592 flying Delta and Virgin Australia (flying Tuesdays ex EWR). The price rises to AUD720 on other days. Those are probably about as good as you'll get. End of Junbe fares are running in the $1200 range, which might need additional work to find a better fare.

Try an internal flight to Honolulu then home on Jetstar or Hawaiian.

Wow, that looks good. I tried Delta and VA website but couldn't see any that cheap. My planned date is the 12th of june.

EWR-DTW-LAX-MEL on 12 June... USD$ 557 through Delta. LAX-MEL operated by Virgin Aust.

Just checking though...when do you need to be in MEL? Leaving the 12th gets you in on the 14th...which you probably know...but can't be too careful!!!

Delta(.com) has the fare for USD462 (AUD600) departing EWR at 9am. This is 2 hours earlier than the same fare being offered on googleflights for AUD592 but the fare on googleflights has to be booked through an agent and I've tried to replicate it on line with no luck.

On Delta's homepage just do a one way search EWR-MEL, then sort by price. It's the second one. They do offer the cheapest price of AUD592 but it leaves at 6am - not worth the $8 saving. The fastest connection, departing EWR at 1225 (three hours later) will be at the higher price of USD556 (AUD722).

The 9am flight has more than one seat available.
