Does anyone have suggestions where to buy travel insurance for a 70 to 80 y.o??

Citibank seems to do it, but the price for 3.5 weeks was around $423, which I thought was a bit high (more than an annual policy for an under 70 year old). Not too worried about cover for any pre-existings, as the person (my mother) is pretty healthy.

Alternatively I am thinking of signing up for an ANZ Gold card, if there is still time....

You'll probably find when it comes to over 70's insurance that the premiums are much of a muchness between different insurance companies (mainly due to the way they analyse risk in that age bracket), and $423 depending on where they are travelling isn't that unreasonable for 3.5wks travel.

Having said that, you might want to check out COTA www.cota.org.au and see what they can do for you.

Thanks for all that info.

She / we just applied for an ANZ gold card, with free travel insurance (up to 80ys), and was approved straightaway. Hopefully it will all come thru in the next thru days.

I have had ANZ gold for the last 10 years or so, and have been happy with it (altho have never made a claim, so can't say how good that side is).

Thanks again.

I would advise getting hold of a copy of the policy wording from ANZ and reading it through thoroughly, ensure it provides adequate repatriation cover, as financially that's the killer (other than medical) that people often don't consider until it's too late.

Hope her trip goes well.

Slightly off topic as I'm not quite in the Seniors group yet. Thought I may need my insurance last Friday when my bag went missing from Melbourne to Hobart.

It only took an extra six hours to arrive :!:

I had read the cover a couple of years back, and thought it adequate. But I read it again last night (thru the eyes of a senior), and still think it is quite good. Just hope the card comes thru before she leaves next week, so I can purchase some accomodation or something on it to trigger the insurance.

Repatriation:

I noticed this organisation (National Seniors Australia) advertised in a weekend paper recently and thought it would be handy for my Mum but it may help you too...

National Seniors Travel Insurance -
"A nil excess applies to all plans except as advised in writing."

A few things to note in the policy wording:

"Are there any age limits on the plans available?"
Age Limits apply to some Plans. If you are 71 years and over you should read page 12 of the PDS which outlines how age limits apply.
  • Plans A and D are automatically available to travellers up to the age of 80 years. If you are 81 years and over, you are required to completed the 81 years and Over Medical Declaration Form before cover can be confirmed.
  • Plans B and C are not available if you are 71 years and over.
  • Plan E and F are not available if you are 76 years and over. If you are aged between 71 to 75 years, you are subject to a compulsory age loading of 50% of the travel insurance premium.

Just did a quick price comparison, and National Seniors was about half the price of AIG. Haven't read any of the fine print, but seems a big difference. In fact, National Seniors was a quite reasonable $256 for premium cover or $175 for silver cover.
