I'm attempting to book a reward flight which includes my grand-daughter who has a hyphenated surname. The online booking doesn't allow special characters in the name field. Etihad social media says to just use the two names, no hyphen, which "should be okay." Not exactly inspiring my confidence. Anyone have any experience with this?

My wife has a hyphen in her christian name & has had no problems with various airlines including Etihad

Thanks RB. I suspect I've read too many travel forum posts about problems caused by non-matching names. I shall attempt to stop stressing.

it's the right advice. Advance passenger information is pulled directly from the passport at check-in. The spelling on the boarding pass, missing a hyphen, will make zero material difference. Airlines, gate agents, TSA, security. They've all seen it before! :)

I know what you mean. I booked an award flight for sons partner and she has a double barrel surname but with no hyphen. I stressed totally as the booking came through with both names merged. But was reassured by Qantas and AFF that this was ok.

Appreciate the reassurances Mel Traveller and Pushka. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'll add my agreement. +1 has a hyphenated surname and she has never had an issue with the missing hyphen. It's an absolute PITA though and both she (now) and I would recommend not keeping a maiden name whilst hyphenating it with a married surname. Choose one or the other and run with it is our best advice!

You can do it with a space, or no space between them. Both are acceptable and will work.

Agree, however, keep in mind that you will need to ensure your FFP profile has the same name.
For example, if the ticket says "blahname" (no spaces), but your FFP account has "blah name" - you will run into problems on some airlines.
