You don't have to fly that much to reach Platinum One. Too many gimmicks.....

Not quite sure how you argue this. I am probably at the bottom of the P1 scale but i still spend a full month per year in the air - that is two hours out of every day airborne. For the entire year. (do 450,000kms in 2017). There are fast track options like the DSC thing but even so.....

Not sure I would entirely agree, sure if you have the means you can hit P1 flying F or running J to Europe or East Coast USA every 6-8 weeks so it can be attained with a little less flying. I for one seem to do it the hard way domestic, NZ, Asia, couple to the US and maybe Europe, at least all International is in J. I know I will retain P1 to Aug 19, however knowing there is nothing more to gain from LTSC I couldn't care how many SC I get above the 14K.

Since hitting LTG I have booked a number of flights with VA especially with the 30% off J in Oct and now with the Accelerate 30% off J offer that came out yesterday. The points earn rate with VA is better than QF and for my situation VA is just the earn method to transfer to SQ.

I'm arguing because it's reality and has happened and continues.

When Platinum One first came out Qantas were budgetting on minimum spend of $25,000 per each Platinum One. There were more than a few that worried Qantas enough to make changes as they were spending less than a quarter of the budgetted amount.

It is still possible to earn Platinum One quite cheaply and I'm sure it's not those that fly weekly. I think it's possible to earn Platinum status with spend of a little over $2,000/year. And I believe that one can earn Platinum One with a little more than 3 times that spend. I think one of your trips is worth a lot more than that?

All I'm saying is there were a lot of cheap SCs out there and if they introduced Lifetime Platinum their burden would be a lot bigger than you calculate.

I'm not convinced that SCs are an accurate indicator of QF loyalty. They could well be for Platinum One but not for most other levels.

For Qantas to provide Lifetime Platinum they would most likely need to go to a revenue based model which would not be suitable to the majority of people on AFF.

But that's only one opinion out of many.
BA doesn’t have this model for LTP equivalent and it works for them. They also have LTP1 equivalent too. It would be easy for QF to do this if they really wanted to. Sadly there’s no competition here (I don’t really consider VA as a long term player in the life time game)

I’m trying to work out the $6K for P1, assume it would be trips in J to Asia and Pacific nations on DSC with very circuitous routes. I can’t see the advantage to doing that to get to P1. It isn’t worth $4K over WP IMHO.
I’m a lower ranked P1 similar to @juddles description of P1 but my Travel budget would exceed the QF budgeting you have quoted on every year I have been P1 including so far this year.

I’m pleased to see that the LTSC tally has been restored

I must be missing something. If there is a way to retain P1 for $6K-7K I would like to know how that can be achieved. A standard price business trip to NYC, assuming I am not lucky enough to book when the sale fares are on would cost roughly $7K-$8K and from SYD that would net 560SC so only 3040 to go.

If I only had to spent $2K to retain WP, that would be good enough for me. In fact I would probably start paying for my +1 and MissM flights and we could all be WP. Maybe it is possible and would love to know that secret without doing side trips or doing status runs. Getting home to see the family is more important to me.

If QF budgeted $25K per P1 they are sure getting that and a bit more from me, then there is the other carriers who get some funds as well.

I did some calcs in regared to minimum spend to attain when P1 first came out.

As a round figure it came out to about $10k without SC bonus promotions.

With $3k I can still retain WP and aside from Champagne on request at SIN there are few tangible benefits of P1 over WP currently.

My LTSC tally is currently over 32k and increasing.

We just go once a year to NYC to make WP. NYC for 4 nights is enough for us to see the shows and then leave . We are both over 20,000 SCs with QF.
Our real long haul carrier has been SQ for the past 7 years as QF dropped out of Perth.

It is all documented on AFF a number of times. I believe one can easily earn 500+ SCs for a little over $1,000. The trip is a lot closer to Australia.

That was the rough number that was mentioned at the Loyalty lunches a few years back. That of course would be a starting point.

Really?
500 SC for $1000 on a QF marketed flight?

I am not in the SC chasing game but I do enjoy all the fun of that hobby and interest anyway. If you PM me how that is possible I swear never to share it with anyone else, but will acknowledge publicly that I was completely wrong in not believing this :)

ADL - NOU or similar.

Maybe ideas are found on paper (or the net), but are they accurate and real? The ADL-MEL-SYD-NOU thing, if you bought it at the current super sale price of $1050 ONE WAY, and you ALSO did it during DSC promotions, still only nets you 600 SC for a return trip costing you $2,100. To reach P1 on that you need to do 6 trips.

So it would cost you $12,600.

I paid $1200 or so for 460 SC. Trust me ;) that's ADL-NOU-ADL in J. Speak to Alicia Clarke travel agent.

I’m obviously doing this P1 thing the wrong way! :)
My annual “gift” to QF is hefty, to put it mildly and I assume that I’m also at the lower end of the P1 ranks, and have been for years.

That aside, I’m not sure I can connect the dots on achieving P1 for the minimal amounts quoted in some of the recent posts. Even on the ADL-NOU-ADL run mentioned here, unless I am misinterpreting, that would mean flying that route eight times in a year in order to get to P1?

Why would anyone do that? There must be better uses of time and money?

I seriously doubt it, but crazier things happened when P1 could be gained via ASAs so I guess anything is possible if one is prepared to do the hard yards BIS.

Ahhhh. The heady days of ASAs. :)
I can scarcely remember that far back.

Personal opinion only, but my guess is that the vast majority of P1s these days are there because they fly routes that they need to fly or want to fly. Doubt that much of the required flying is for meaningless status runs. Not worth the candle, for one thing. :)

Yep I agree. There is the opportunity to take up the double SC promotions when you can, some of the current P1s have been able to use including myself. I don’t really think that outside the rare air that is AFF P1 is a status worth chasing from zero.
There’s no Lifetime Benefit beyond LTG and many other P1 equivalents eg. GGL on BA offer far, far more in tangible benefits.

Yes, PF. I’m envious of you youngies, who could pick up the option of BA with enough time to benefit.
Too late for me, when I discovered that route to Lifetime status that meant something tangible.
Or that’s what I decided at the time. :)
Perhaps should have taken the plunge then.

Edit: And I don’t know why the posts I am responding to are not appearing.
Will try harder next time. :)

Exactly.

I would really like to know if there is anyone on this forum who gets to P1 using stunts like the ADL-NOU concept, as much as it could be done (but at more than the 6k suggested). I have booked flights during DSC promotions, but have ended up never needing that for P1. I only do it in case the opportunity exists to book through non-QF to attain or gain something from other programs. I already have booked flights for 2018 that will see me through to 2019 with P1 again. But to actually do status runs for P1 status? I get it for WP, as that is a true step up from Gold. But aiming for P1?

What would be the point? As becomes obvious to anyone who is actually P1, the main benefit above WP is help when things go wrong. The yearly bottle of champas and the possibility of an invite to some event are trivia.

But I am the first person to respect the realities and desires of others. I am crazy and every so often, rather than just fly back to Australia "straight" via Chile, I go on a round the world saga. If someone wants to "achieve" P1 just for the hell of it, for the bragging rights, or whatever, good on them. Truly :)

If anyone wants my P1 baggage tags, I will happily send them to them - if I can find where I put them. :)
