I'm booked in J on QF9 (SIN-LHR) next Wedesday and have put in for a points upgrade to F. (I'm WP). What are my chances? Are the J beds any good?

Many thanks.

Well it's no guarantee (and I assume you meant 14 May which is the Wed after next) but EF is showing:

F3 A3 J5 C4 D0 I0 B9 H9 K4 M0

Given that it is F3/A3 I think there is a reasonable chance of the points upgrade coming through - dependent on your statusand when you put in the request :)

Oh and if you did mean the next wednesday (being 7 May):

F5 A5 J4 C4 D4 I3 B8 H6 K3 M2

Even better chance I would say :)

Can you please let us know if you were successful with the upgrade.

thanks

I've only ever requested two J -> F upgrades and both came through - and that was last year when I was a lowly SG and on a DONE4 so I needed A class availability. My guess is that you've got a pretty good chance given you are a WP and there are seats currently available.

Are the J beds any good? They are pretty good but F is a whole different thing. I've never had much sleep in J but I get hours of sleep in F and I really think it is down to the fully flat bed. It also seems quieter up there, maybe due to less people.

The F experience can be fantastic - if the crew are on form. I am running at about 6/8 being great and 2/8 being awful.

In J I find the beds ok but the staff highly variable and the food potentially hazardous ;) I am probably a little over critical of QF though - my expectations are higher than they often deliver.

The F beds are great and the service usually great as well. The bed being flat makes a big difference. I used points on a done4 last year to upgrade to F SYD to SFO. Didnt tell mrs batesy until we were at the airport so she had a pleasant surprise, worth the points.

Thank you all. I did mean next Wednesday, the 7th, so that sounds hopeful.

My question about the J beds is because to date I've only been in F (for work) or Y (personal) on Qantas long-haul to Europe. F is usually great, Y is usually awful.

The upgrade was only 35,000 points which seemed pretty good value - about the same as a J return Brisbane-Adelaide.

Will let you know how I get on.

E/F is returning:

QF 009: SIN-LHR 7MAY - F5 A5 J3 C2 D2 I0 B5 H4 K4 M4 R1 L3 V1 S1 N1 Q1 O1 X0 E0
BA7309: SIN-LHR 7MAY - F5 A5 J3 C2 D3 I0 Y4 B5 H5 K4 M2 L1 V1 N1 Q1 S1 G0

(codeshare - same flight)

Were you seated together in the F cabin?

We are flying on the SYD to SFO service in August and computer is showing A5 F5 but I don't want the upgrade unless we are seated together!

Checked in at Brisbane half an hour ago and got an F boarding pass for the SIN-LHR leg in row 2 (perfect, not too close to the wardrobe in the nose, very private). Must be a quiet day if they can upgrade me 10 hours before the flight...

Incidentally, I'm now sitting in the F lounge in Brisbane - first time I knew there was one. (It's on the left as you come towards the QP.) Not very different to the Biz lounge though.

Yes we were seated together. If you look at the seatmap there are only 3 rows of two so we may have been lucky, even if you arent seated next to each other you can still be say 2a, 3a. We were in 3E. 3F, ideal. We were on our honeymoon and treated like royalty!!

Is this new? I have never seen it? I always go to the J lounge.

Most of my upgrades have been obvious 12-24 hours before the flight, in each of the following ways:
  • with a deduction in my point balance;
  • as the booking appears on Qantas.com
  • in www.checkmytrip.com
The Flounge has been there for at least this century.

As posted it has decor similar to that of the J lounge.

The F&B is of a somewhat higher standard.

I was a bit peeved before a flight to AKL last year on a quiet Saturday afternoon when it was closed - I had to employ the J facility. :-|

I have had BNE claim that the lounge was closed once which seemed to be because they didn't want to service it; when I pushed them on the opening hours and queried whether or not it was supposed to be open when the J lounge was open, they opened it

How full was the first cabin?

Would you have been as happy if you weren't seated together?

I am sure I would have been happy had we not been seated together. The cabin was full, but there were some clear op-ups (FA's mum and two kids). Full makes no difference it is still a great experience.

Therein lies my dilema - we have to long haul flights coming up in J - myself, partner and at the time a 9 month old infant. In J we have bulkhead seats, bassinet and are seated together. If this can't be replicated I don't think I want to take my chances!

In the International terminal , there has been a Flounge for a long while; unfortunately it is hardly any different ime to the business lounge adjacent

Dave

And the BNE J lounge has better views and more toilets.
