Qantas replaces Emirates on most Trans Tasman flights

Maybe Alan said we will pull out of DXB and leave it to you (EK) if you pull out of NZ and leave it to us :rolleyes:
 
Qantas made the announcement as part of the EK / QF relationship. And on the Q flights I’ve been on in Y and J they aren’t exactly the best I’ve had.
I understand that, but ultimately EK is in charge of it's own network and scheduling.
 
How will this impact the price (particularly J) AUS-AKL - you could often find decent sales around $550 each way now that EK isn't flooding the market with cheap seat they want filled..
 
I assume the A332 required for the new NZ services will come from existing transcon services.

There will most likely be some unhappy campers in the near future...
 
One other sad aspect is that CI that was providing additional competition across the Tasman has reduced its flights to (if I recall) only an offering from BNE, and it was flying (for instance) A333s from MEL.
CI isn't a OW member airline though.
Latam J 2 across on the 787 with no suite is great for outside viewing on A or J rows.

Ah ok so because Qantas announced that EK were withdrawing that makes it Alan Joyce’s fault. Got it.

I’ve got a few bones to pick with Rupert Murdoch now about all announcements his organisations make about various things. LOL :)

Not his fault but in on the decision making process I’d dare say. It’s al bundled up in the alliance according to his announcement.
 
I do prefer the JetConnect crews on trans Tasman but I'm sure going to miss Dom Perignon and the superb Bordeaux served on EK.
 
I guess economics are at play? What was the utilisation on these routes (in economy)?

As far as I can tell, pretty bad.

In the most recent 3 months for which stats are available, Emirates' trans-Tasman flights had average load factors ranging from 45% to 69%. Mostly the numbers are in the mid-50s. That's simply not sustainable.

Almost all flights I have been on have had near empty J and F cabins. Next month I am the only pax in F (so far) on one sector, and 1 of 3 (so far) on another and the J cabins only have a few seats allocated (I know it's not a full picture of the loads of course, but it's a fair indication than there's very little paid demand).

I think EK's main traffic AU-NZ has been cheap fares down the back which may have made some sense, but I can see EK to rejig schedules for a bigger spread from their AU destinations (such as the new EK flight timed to replace QF1's SYD-DXB timings)

And all of my flights in Y have been packed.

I'm guessing as they rejig the schedules they will be able to reduce the downtime (and therefore the associated parking costs) between the flights which was hypothesized as the reason for the tag flights in the past
