On paternity leave at the moment, and because he's such a good boy, I've found the time to build a side table for our lounge. It'll be mid-century modern with hairpin legs. The wood is 33mm spotted gum.

I played around with a few shapes, and settled on an acute triangle.

First up, I traced the shape, 1) to have a record of it in case something went horribly wrong in the cutting process, and 2) to retrace the shape on the wood to minimise wastage.

I borrowed a jigsaw from a friend, a Ryobi from 1983 (the receipt was still in the box), but it was complete garbage. I went out and bought a Bosch one, and that thing cut through the wood like butter.

So you thought you would just whip this up with your spare time or is woodworking something you already enjoy doing?

Looking forward to the pics.
I enjoy making things in general. Whether its web related, electronics, woodworking, random inventions and product design; its all happening over here. Mrs AS wanted a side table, so I figured I'd make one, rather than buy something. Plus it'll complement our coffee table, which is made from blackbutt.

I smoothed the sides and faces with a detail sander and sanded the edges by hand, just to take off the hard 90 degree edge.

Spotted gum is a bit light and I wanted to match our coffee table somewhat so I added a stain. Three coats of clear polyurethane will finish it up. This is the bottom of the table, you can make out the pilot drill holes.
