General Medical issues thread

On a more cheerful note I got Dr FM a few weeks ago to talk to Ms FM about what happened at her Sydney appointment with Prof Youssef. Apart from him thinking she was a very unusual case (tell me about it), he confirmed localised scleroderma, but that it was no longer active and no need for methotrexate.

She is adamant that he said she did not need to see a Rheumatologist again, unless something else happens. I am still a bit suspicious of this - I think she is so sick of doctors and tests that she just doesn't want to do it anymore, however her decision. There is a very low rate of localised turning into systemic, so just have to hope and pray....

Sigh, you haven't convinced me yet!
We live longer than ever before. We have a better quality of life than we have ever had. We travel more than ever before.

You and I are in a unique situation. We both suffer from auto immune issues. I have been suffering since my teens. I know it will eventually drag me down. I've accepted the challenge. I want to fight and see how long I can stall the inevitable. It's the small things in life that keep us going.

8 year old girl has now died from this years flu.

"Every day we all beg for advice that we may have peaked and then we see things drop off a bit and then them escalate again, so I'm not quite sure if we've peaked yet or not," Ms Hennessy told the radio station.

"Which is why we're trying to make sure that we look at what is the next stage of managing such a large number of patients if we haven't peaked."

More than 160,000 people have contracted the flu in Australia so far this year, Health Department figures show, compared with 75,818 recorded cases for the same time last year.

Warnings of potential thunderstorm asthma next four days in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, WeatherZone's four day pollen forecast predicts moderate risk days for Monday and Wednesday and a very high risk day on Thursday, with hayfever and allergy sufferers advised to stay indoors and have their medication on hand.

Dr Jeremy Silver from the University of Melbourne told radio station 3AW the recent rainfall combined with windy conditions and pollen could create ideal conditions for thunderstorm asthma.

Dr Silver is a lead author of a recent study investigating thunderstorm asthma outbreaks – a report triggered by a thunderstorm asthma epidemic in Melbourne last year which led to nine deaths and was considered the most extreme event of its kind.

But, he said early indications suggested conditions would not be as dire as those experienced last year – for several weeks at least.

Wonder how the wind affected people in Melbourne today. Very noisy in the cbd apartments.

Low blood pressure causing headaches and dizziness?

Is there a way to increase blood pressure? Salt? Drink more water?

A least 2 litres a day. ~15 litres of water and you will drown in your own lungs.
That's what is being consumed at the moment. How much more water does one need to drink to raise blood pressure? There may not necessarily be an easy answer to the question.

Low blood pressure isn’t regarded as a health issue unless you are blacking out.
Yes, I have have had chronic low blood pressure for most of my adult life. Get a bit woozy occasionally but doctors are generally happy that it is low.
Mr LtL had out of control hypertension for many years and a number of ischemic events over that time. Moving to spiranolactone about 10 years ago seems to have targeted the particular issue he has and now he has quite low BP, but he is not complaining!
