Would you spend one overnight in Glencoe or at Loch Lomond?

This is for our trip from Isle of Skye to Glasglow

I will eventually learn to spell Glasgow not Glasglow but not anytime soon!

Glencoe probably more interesting for one night. But if Loch Lomond, take the light aircraft flight over the lochs and the coast. Also you could do dinner at the excellent Martin Wishart one * - Loch Lomond Home - Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond

Now youve done it (aircraft flight). My husband would be, "Cant I do both?" when I tell him options.

Not that he has a say but I like to include him in the process but honestly, hes not listening. Just says each night, "What are we doing tomorrow?"

Im not a foodie but that resturant looks amazing.

Looks amazing - I did the Fort William to Mallaig train 35 years ago and still have vivid memories of it - only another three weeks and I'll be off to do the NC500

Very interested in your trip so hope youre planning on updating us while you are doing it

That's the intention :) and if not I'll write it up after - straight after it's Spain for 10 days then Bordeaux for 4 days then a week at friend's house in France having a quiet time so should catch-up then

Not Scotland I know but I just had lunch in Moreton on Marsh at a little cafe. I spend my life in search of the perfect hot chocolate and this one was pretty good and I had the Moreton Mess as well. Lovely spot. If you want more info on the Cotswolds area just let me know.

LOL. We had excellent lunch and chocolate at pub in Bourton on the Hill, but what's it got to do with planning a trip to Scotland? Now if you were talking about the Highland Chocolatier in Grandtully - http://www.highlandchocolatier.com - then we'd be talking!

Because I'm sitting here with maps and stuff planning my trip and checking out the itineraries of Denali and lovetravellingoz and notice LTO is going to spend three days in MOM :)

New gortex jacket passes the wind and rain test for Scotland.

Though the real test for a gore-tex jacket is are you still dry on the inside after hiking/cycling for 2 hours in it. ie its ability to pass through the perspiration.

Walked around for about 2.5hrs and still dry. :)

Hubby was happy that he didn't feel the cold wind. I was impressed that a couple of shakes and it's basically dry.

After all the Tasmanian whisky, I'm sure hubby didn't feel the cold! :) :)

Yes having the right gear makes all the difference in being able to enjoy the day no matter the weather. For our trips we always give great thought to our clothing for if you have to be out and about for upto 8 hours the tight clothing makes all the difference from being miserable to be able to enjoy the day no matter what Mother Nature provides. For Scotland 2018 we will pack all our normal trekking gear clothing wise. Outer layers and inner layers and the waterproof gloves too! And a rainshell for our day-pack as well as walking in the rain will drench most packs. I also have lighweight waterproof bags that I place my phone cameras, dry clothes etc in if rain is about.

For Scotland 2018 I have as part of our trip planning been thinking about what clothing and gear we need. This to me is a very important part of trip preparation. And yes I also confess that I am a bit of a gear nut and so it is also great fun for me to do.

As part of this I have just treated ourselves to an Outdoor Research Ghost Hat each as I am anticipating a fair bit of rain and/or drizzle in Scotland and Ireland and they were just on sale. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R6z9F8r7Rc
I wear glasses and so for me I always hike and travel with a cap or hat as if it rains it keeps my glasses dry and my ability to actually see is maintained! The rain hood on a jacket is never enough by itself.

For the mixed days of cycling and hikes we have also just purchased some new walking shoes. Waterproof as rain is likely in Scotland and Ireland. Soles stiff enough for foot comfort a on a long days cycle or hike. We have purchased them now as 1/ our old walking shoes are past their best (not our hiking boots. but they are not good for cycling) or more suited to warm weather hikes and 2/ so that we can test them out in a range of conditions now as we only want to travel with one pair each of heavier footwear for this trip. If the testing is not satisfactory we will have time to road test other shoes.

Commencing a 6 hour day-walk at over 2000m to Lac Blanc, Chamonix Valley, France in 2016. A day full of rain and white outs, but stunning views! And yes it was cold with thoughts of do we really want to set off on a long hike on such an inclement day.

And at Lac Blanc.....still smiling despite the cold and wet as my wife is wearing the right gear for the day.

Clothing wise the cruise through Scottish waters is presenting some challenges though. We normally travel light, but the cruise will entail a bit more dress-wear than we would normally travel with. So my current thought is to freight a bag back home after the cruise to get rid of the clothes and shoes that we will not need for last half of the trip. We are going over in SQ Suites. So plenty of baggage allowance to London, but the flights to Scotland and Ireland will be bought as discount Y. So we will probably need to purchase one extra 20kg bag allowance for for these two flights.

I've already booked our accommodation for Skye, and even then I had to change a date because they were booked out 11mths in advance.

Bought new boots and better quality socks as well, been wearing them a couple of times per week for now, to break them in. Not that I'm hiking, more for ankle support and keep dry.

Hubby got caught in the rain yesterday at a waterfall and realises he needs a pack cover for his camera bag. He had a poncho in his bag that did a ok job but learnt that when I say, take your jacket, he should just, take his jacket!

And thanks for info on the ghost hat. I don't wear hats as I overhead and like you can have half mesh.
