It's all about who does the (somewhat perfunctory) patdown. I suspect most passengers (and security guards) would think it more proper to have this done by someone of the same sex.

I only ever frequent on my lonesome but they have split lines side by side in MNL - I assume you could keep visual contact all the way through.

It works in India. Men and boys on one side and women and girls on the other.

That wasn't an issue for us but I imagine custom would dictate boys are searched by men and the girls by women. If that would be intolerable then I guess those flights/countries should be avoided.

That can be requested anywhere however when the genders are segregated into separate lines, I wonder what the mechanism is?.

Many airports will only wave someone through the body scanner when someone of the same gender is free to do a pat down if necessary.

It happened to me a few times in KUL last month. The men were waved through whilst the female security guard finished with another female pax.

Back in the 80s there was gender separation for security in Taiwan.Except that the men were patted down by young women and the women by old men.
I wasn't allowed to go back and have a second pat down.

There was no gender segregation at KLIA2 yesterday...
