QANTAS to launch their own credit card in tie-up with Citibank

You cant fly without spending. FF Status already is limited to those who can spend to achieve it.

But if you throw status credits into the mix of a credit card, suddenly status is at least partly achieved when not flying.

Then it's game over, as far as I'm concerned. Status credits should be purely and simply earned by

Earning status credits from any activity other than flying makes no sense. The whole reason they exist is to measure how much you fly with the airline. If you can earn them from general spend just get rid of status credits and use points earning to qualify for status.

I couldn't agree more.

Just for the record I am one who is "old school" re earning status.. should be the hard way, bum in seat way... but this has been changing throughout loyalty programs over the past few years from hotels to airlines. I freely admit my status on UA, for example, is part paid, part earned by flying. That's their game, I'm playing it when it suits me. Hotels have been even faster to jump on the pay-for-status bandwagon.

I don't agree but accept its part of the new world, and if it's going to work fr me (like DSC) then I will use it... because guess what? Everyone else is. And if nobody else was, they wouldn't keep offering it.

Be interesting to see this next "game changing" (insert whatever buzzword bingo you want - thanks dfcatch)

I'm reliably informed that there will be a "rich pipeline" of offers, specifically aimed to "gamify" high-value "millennials".

More seriously though - cannibalisation will be a significant issue for Qantas Loyalty to overcome, and I'm confident that the strategy and numbers have been sufficiently crunched.

Whilst the concept is far less "revolutionary" than QF is getting credit for - it is a smart move on their behalf.

Looking ahead -

- What does this mean for the QF Cash Card? Will it be enhanced to death? Will it be a complimentary product?

- QF finance next with a view to morphing Qudos Bank into a full QF Bank offering a full range of products with both the QF CC and QF Cash cards being assumed in addition to the current loans and deposit accounts?

Interesting concept, so am subscribing, although the Citi tie-up sends shivers down my spine.

I agree here. Their health insurance is about 45% more expensive than what I currently pay.

Mine actually worked out cheaper - Previously I was with MEDIBANK PRIVATE. Will check again next year and probably change back and see what offers come. been loyal for over 20 years to Medibank private but not worth a brass razoo so I'm going to work the systems for me now !

Guess: the SC earn will be something like a bonus 50% or DSC on the first (or a user selected) flight booked directly with QF and paid entirely with the card each year (resets each time annual fee is paid).

this is all assuming there will be some kind of status credits earn (whether one off sign up bonus, increased rate or otherwise) associated with the card. I think it's just as probable that there won't be, and there'll just be a somewhat decent point earn rate and one or two qantas-specific perks, like (number of) lounge access or seat selection.

Did you see the publicity stunt the other day..... Yep card comes with free cream pie......Higher tier card holders get it in the face ;)

Nothing for nothing...
You should also consider what the cost will be if you ever need to use the insurance. QANTAS medical insurance (Assure) is underwritten by NIB, which is one of the worst providers when it comes to out of pocket costs. I always feel a bit sorry for patients when I see that particular company's name on the front of the history, because I know they have a nasty surprise coming in the mail once they get home.

RE: the new card as mentioned by the OP, this card is for high flyers.
No way would I be afford to pay $450/$350 a year for a card. Not that I would be approved.
QCC I see is now earning 0.25 points per $1 spent in Aust, they probably would take the product down sooner or later.
Coles and Woolworths have permanently taken down their reloadable cards, now only their gift cards are available, as well as their run of the mill credit cards.
Banks in Aust do not seem that keen on providing anything without a cost.
Of course, there are those cash back schemes, not linked to card spend, (which I haven't looked indepth into).
Apart from that Bankwest account, not a lot of other banks give out benefits on spending our own money, we have to spend other peoples money to gain any benefit 99.9% of the time.

QUdos (former Qantas Staff Credit Union) have distanced themselves from QF in order to become, at least on the surface, a more independent (small) banking provider. QF doesn't own them so I can't see anything happening there. I'd more wager QF would either start their own fully owned sub business or continue with a partner, like Citi(!) to provide more branded financial services.

Like JQ has their CC's through Macquarie Bank. which lends a level of comfort (to be honest) in the products being supported by a well respected and big operator.

Uh yes. This is my big worry. I had a Citi card for years (gave it away 3-4 years back) and their website was just terrible, and customer service on par. *shudder*

Not status credit-related, but for what it's worth: just got a letter today saying Westpac's Earth Black's Amex points earn goes down from 1.5 to 1.25 points, overseas earn on earth black mastercard goes down from 1.5 to 0.625, and ATO payments don't count anymore. Domestic mastercard purchases still 0.625. Wondering if there is a link.

I'm off to the CC forum to find a good Amex deal :)

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

What about a card that offers
1 point per $
Use the card 30 times or more in a month(billing cycle) and get a extra 0.5 points per dollar,
Fly with Qantas/Jetstar get a extra 0.5 pt per $ on card spend

But the extra points would apply from first card spend per billing cycle(Amex does the same with every day card in the US)

Maybe offer it on statement or at anniversary date so it would get rid of card churners

And maybe the option of a base $0 free card with 0.05pt per $1 then being able to add travel insurance, other insurance

I know a lot here(or Atleast some) here churn credit cards but I think the 30 transactions a month = bonus points on all spend would keep some of those customers on that card, don't you think?
