Advice on whisky

Thanks for the info jasonking. Will get them to go shopping in town rather than at the duty free. But i think it will be quite a while before I buy another bottle!!

Holy S*&T looks like the Yamazaki 18yr you have is the limited edition and not the usual bottling which goes for $800.
A little bird told me the Y50,000 yen from Narita Duty Free is the limited edition and is $1500.
Does it comes in wooden case?

Yup. It's the one in the wooden case! Holy S*&T is right!!! Wow! $1500 & $1000!! Seems that I bagged a bargain then!! I am definitely feeling a lot better now!! :D:D:D

The bottles are for a grand old man, grandpa of Ric's Jr friend who invited us to his private hacienda just outside Madrid end of December.

Such bargain compared to Oz,maybe I should get a bottle each for myself!....even if I don't drink!!
 
No quibbles with the retail prices, but I am pretty sure you are just paying (a lot) extra for the bottle on the Hibiki 21, and that the innards are 'standard'.

I would also be interested if anyone can tell me the difference between the 'Limited Edition' Yamazaki 18 and the standard 25,000 yen product. If anything it is just a slight difference in casking to the best of my knowledge.

These are very much targeted at foreigners, not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that in and of itself.

I would not serve it in any of our Tokyo bars, and I cannot imagine it being on too many menus. I do not want to encourage this sort of bubble.

Well, sorry about that. But it is not like there are especially good vintages of a 21-year-old whisky... when there is all this hype about Japan, I would just be spending more money on Scotch or elsewhere, and waiting for things to return to some semblance of normal.

The duty-free editions exist in part to prevent even greater supply problems... there are tourists from a certain large country starting with C who buy up basically everything these days.

My daughter struggles to keep a six-bottle inventory at her Kobe bar at the moment, not so much because of demand over the counter as difficulty getting it wholesale.

Been quiet here so will put up a few comments - having enjoyed the balance of the BUNNAHABHAIN12, have to say it's pretty good but I couldn't go past the Tal10 for value.

In TAS. in Jan, picked up a HELLYERS ROAD PEATED, now this is very nice and smoooth as.........., better than Tal10 but a line call re $$ value.

Also tasted the LARK SINGLE CASK, as good a whiskey ever sampled !!!, delicious.

Arrived home with a Sullivans Cove Single Cask French Oak Whisky 700mL, 47.5%, unopened and in the safe for a future significant family event, as yet unconceived :p

Some real Aussie quality whiskey being produced in Tassie, must explore the HELLYERS ROAD further !
 
I grabbed a bottle of Glen Deveron 16 years Highland single malt from the duty free recently. I had not come across this one before but found it very smooth

Enjoying it immensely

Hellyers Road Peated is a really nice drop. I did prefer the Pinot Noir though. It can be found at duty free in Perth at quite a good price, about $75. Hellyers also do a fab Irish Cream for those who likes Baileys.

I tried Starward too and it wasnt bad either. I did prefer Hellyers though, got a bit more bite and complexity with the Pinot or Peated.

Thanks Major, not familiar with brand, see DM's has the GlenDeveron12 @ $76, must get one soon. It has quite good reviews with reviewers mentioning smooth with a long taste and unique flavours such as "ginger beer/apples".

Sounds interesting.
 
Haven't given STARWARD a honest taste, a small nip at a tasting left no lasting impression, find that
more than that taste test is needed to appreciate some whiskys.

The LARK though, well worth it it you can afford the $$$'s at around $150 / 500ml............not something I can do to often :D
 
Dan Murphy's have a member's preorder for Glenlivet Ordachory $300. Only 287 bottles from a single cask.
Highly unusual Google resulted from DM only. Maybe that cask is meant exclusively for DM.

STARWARD is a "younger" style whisky (aged for only 2-3 years), so it needs some ice or water to reduce much of its bite (strong alcohol).
