if the seatmap shows 1x2x1 refurbished, if 2x2x2 its EBG/EBL

Seat map shows 2x2x2

I'm not happy to do an overnight flight with such a rubbish seat.

Looks like I will have to pay a change fee and go on a different flight.

I really dislike Qantas, and paying for a premium airline and getting an angle seat on an overnight flight is beyond a first world problem.

There is time for that to change

Well if you hate them because of angled seats I guess you hate Emirates and lots of other airlines for same feature. If you dont like Qantas then DONT fly them. Simples

I do not hate Qantas.... I'm just not a fan. I generally don't usually fly with them internationally. This 2 day trip to Sydney is not optional and I wanted a full day in Bangkok on the 4th, therefore I had limited options. I am chasing 5000 BAEC Tier points before March, so the 140 this gives me helps. My return trip is on EK metal, in F with a QF code share. The timing of the return flight suited me.

I had thought (wrongly) that Qantas had upgraded all their A330's to the new layout and had read very good reviews about it.

It absolutely is a first world problem. You have to fly in J or F as result of a trip.. the fact you have the means to do it and yet are still complaining about having an angled flat bed instead of a fully flat one for an 8 odd hour flight is the definition of first world problem...

MrP did a paid upgrade to business class on Emirates last night and slept happily for several hours in the angled bed. Not as good as flat but he was happy.

I'd be unhappy with this too, given that QF undertook to have the whole fleet converted by the end of this year.
But I'd hold off switching flights just yet for, as mannej suggest above, there may well be a change of aircraft in the mean time.

Qantas advertised all A330s would be the suites by the end of 2016. If you have purchased your ticket from them you should be able to change free of charge based on your consumer protection rights (advertised product, not delivered). Angled vs suites is not a 'first world problem'. You have every right to be annoyed by it.

Don't think they've ever advertised all seats fully flat. Same as the 747s with OEB/OJM

Originally it was 30 aircraft by mid-2016, then became 28 when EBH/EBI left by end-2016, and then EBG/EBL didn't get done. I only assume it comes down to leasing issues on those aircraft - no point refurbing if the lessor is playing hard ball

They definitely did advertise all A330 as having new J class. Media Releases - QANTAS UNVEILS NEW A330 BUSINESS SUITES WITH WORLD-FIRST SEAT RECLINE FROM TAKE OFF TO LANDING - Qantas News Room

They didn't advertise all 747 though.

There are weight issues with the 2 A330s that haven't been reconfigured. The new seats are a lot heavier

You do understand that the non-refurbed aircraft have the Skybed 1 - that is, a flat bed which is at a slight angle to the floor? It is not just a seat that reclines.

'Slight angle to the floor' if you believe airline marketing :) A 9 degree incline is pretty hefty after a couple hours. Maybe ok for people sleeping on their back, but for side sleepers they are not ideal. The fact that nearly every major airline ditched them fairly quickly is probably evidence of their unpopularity.

I have sorted my issue. Changed my flight to SYD to an EK flight with Qantas Flight # It leaves BKK later than I would have preferred, but it'a an A380 in First for only $6000 more for both of us.

I won't make this mistake again.

Why do you think Qantas doesn't use these planes on DOM routes and use the refurbished ones on their international flights?

Source?
We've previously seen similar rumours re the 747s - weak floors, heavy seats, that were ultimately refurbed.
And the fact that QF initially announced 30, then 28, makes me think this is more lease issues (either the lessor playing hard ball, or QF reconsidering whether to extend given the imminent 787s)

The refurbed A330-200s are really designed for domestic operations only, and some shortish international (such as CGK and SIN).

Ironically, it's the 200 version that actually has a longer range than the 300; but QF has designated the A330-300 for international.

The new SYD-PEK route (starts 25 January) requires an A330-200 for range reasons, but the domestic config is no good for the long flight (for J toilet, galley and crew rest reasons). So the only A330s that can operate that route are unrefurbed 200s. QF has said the two unrefurbed aircraft will be dedicated to the PEK route, but they have some downtime that needs to be filled; it seems the SIN flight neatly fits this gap.
