Points upgrade affected by travel partner?

Greetings All,
Quick question with hopefully a quick answer (travelling later today). Flying QF36 SG-MEL later today and have requested points upgrade from Y to J. I'm SG and travelling with NB colleague. Our bookings were linked for seat selection purposes but I'm wondering if that link affects my (remote) possibility of getting the upgrade? Thanks for your advice,

it looks like there is 1 seat left in J on that flight, not sure that a link would affect your chances
