Thanks largely to this wonderful forum, the last few international trips I have done have either been in J or F with the occasional Y+.
This Christmas I am travelling to SFO with the family (party of five) on a QF 747 via SYD.
My 'problem' is that I am not sure how I am going to handle this trip in Y (first world problems for sure).
It's been a while since I have had to slum it.
I'm 184cm and relatively slim build.
Just wondering how the seasoned ones on here have handled doing this and are there any tips you can give a weary traveller?

I'd definitely be pre-selecting seats in an exit row or the front row of economy (row 43 on most 747s) if I were you. At least you'll get a bit more legroom then.

And try not to think about what's happening on the other side of the curtain!

All the exit rows are taken:-(

Can you afford a comfort seat... Or sell a kidney or a kid?

What about the pairs of two seats down the back? The 2nd pair of two has good leg room as no window seat in front whereas first pair of two still has a window seat in front as that is last row of three.

I've been looking at those seats. You may be onto something here. :)

+1. These are my favourite economy seats on the 747 after the exit rows and row 43. The legroom on the window seat of the second row of "pairs" is pretty good.

As others have already mentioned, these seats are actually pretty good too on the B747, especially for couples on sold out flights IME.

These seats of 2 allow for Plenty of space next to the window and the seat due to the curvature of the plane ( just not suitable for propping a pillow against though due to the distance between the seat and the window).

As a WP IME the CSS will find you down the back too for all the necessary pampering, aka Noise Cancelling Headphones and the like :)

Compression socks - scholl brand seem to do the job ok. They absolutely eliminate the sore legs/feet and make for a much more comfortable experience.

You'll be fine. Think of the destination and that should get you through.

Also I find if tired then I tend to fall asleep easier.

So do you mean row 72?

That's the refurb config. My recommendation of row 70 stands. :)
ROw 70 is taken on both flights. I'll try for 69 over to SFO and looks like 72 is the only row available from LAX-MEL given that it is also a 747.

Are you talking row 72/73? I've never tried them.
