If QF persist with 9 across in Y they will make their dream iners the opposite of the A380 - people will actively avoid them

I already actively avoid any flight that will be 10-across in a 777, after suffering the Etihad version of this for AUH-LHR. I will be adding all flights that will be 9-across in a 787 to that list......

9 across on the A350 is painful too and one to avoid for long-Haul.

This will probably be reflected in the price at the end of the day, but a low-cost 3-3-3 9-across and a full-service 2-4-2 8-across seem to be the logical choices for differentiating your services. However that is a reduction of what, 30 seats! Money has to be made up somewhere.

Although the cynic in me says that this just allows them to have a better range as they can sell all their seats instead of blocking off some. They'll make us wear the cost even though it actually helps them.
