Will soon be checking in for PER-BNE-SYD* Dom arriving at 21:00
Departing SYD Int at 07:40+1
I am assuming QF will only check my bags to SYD because the international sector isn't the same calendar day?

*Of course I have a reason for flying via BNE! 40 extra SCs for $9 extra.

That's been my experience but don't know the exact reason why. It can't due to a calendar day rule as many connections are over calendar days.

SYD is deemed closed overnight, so no through-checking overnight is permitted in SYD. That's the reason why you can't do it.

You should insist on your baggage being checked through to Sydney only. Then you have a better chance of them being loaded onto your Int flight (and not stuck in Brisbane).

Uhhh the standard procedure is to check the bags to SYD in this case if it's all one PNR. Stopping in BNE will require one to ask the agent to shortcheck the bags to BNE.

Can't tell from the OP whether collecting bags in SYD is seen as a positive or negative.

I often go HBA-MEL (for the day) -SYD (evening), stopping there overnight before an early departure for an overseas port next day AND I have always had bags checked only to SYD (I see it as a positive), never an issue.

I don't mind either way, I just want to know for planning purposes.

That's not what I meant. If the OP had the ability to check through to the final International destination, he would not know if there was a stuff up with the connection at Brisbane. It happened to me with a similar itinerary.

Ah I see what you mean, it doesn't increase your chance of your bags being loaded onto the intl sector. If the bags get buggered in BNE they get buggered in BNE regardless of where they're tagged to. The difference would be you would know the bags are stuck in BNE when you get off in SYD and may have the opportunity to have the bagsretagged and delivered on BNE-LAX if QF hasn't been proactive and placed the bags on the next BNE-SYD already.

The bags can't accidentally be tagged to your final destination eg LAX if that flight is the next calendar day as it won't even show as oncarriage in checkin - the CSA will only see the two flights PER/BNE/SYD.
