Hi all, my question is in relation to points upgrade of paid ticket where there is possibly seat availability on only one of two legs.

Example:

Have paid J ticket flying London to Sydney on QF2. This flight stops in Dubai, but the flight number is the same for both sectors. I put in an request for a points upgrade to First, such request only being doable on the QF site for the whole flight - ie both sectors. What happens if there is a seat available on only one of the sectors?

Can they upgrade you for only one sector? Do they? Would they change the points required?

Cheers :)

Please, anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Yes they can upgrade you for one sector.
On QF2 you will get upgraded LHR-SYD or if a late gate upgrade DXB-SYD.
You will not be upgraded LHR-DXB as a stand alone.
Points cost will be 60K for LHR-SYD, 45K DXB-SYD

A friend of mine got a gate upgrade from Y+ to J from DXB to LHR when flying from Australia. If you care mainly about the longer flight then gate upgrades on the flight home to Australia may provide better value.

Still, the points are only charged for the leg(s) you are upgraded on. So if after you get back to SYD you fly back to LHR again and get a gate upgrade from DXB-LHR you would be charged 15,000 points.

I think the loads are likely to be lower in premium cabins between DXB and LHR (as some will have connections at DXB) so there would be a greater chance of a gate upgrade when flying from Australia than on the flight back home. But the flight loads do vary.

Yeah, I fly back MEL-DXB-LHR - and expertflyer suggest that may be the case. I would just love to have tasted QF F - never have!

Hopefully you will get the upgrade. If not then you can try using the points again next time (maybe in both directions in the hope that one direction will be successful).

Personally I decided to save my points for future trips rather than try for a J to F upgrade, but it would be great to experience flying F once in a lifetime.

Touch wood (my head of course). I'm at 100% for J-F upgrades ex-LHR over the past 3 years. I'm feeling pretty confident for you juddles.

I missed out on one recently LHR-DXB-MEL (J-F). First upgrade I've ever missed out on. It can happen, but (thankfully) rarely in my experience.

I got it :) At checkin in LHR. All the way LHR-DXB-SYD.

My first ever experience of QF First. And I loved it!

Unfortunately I was extremely exhausted before boarding - had just done three days of travel within South America and then across to LHR before I got to board. So I pretty much slept the whole way - which is truly amazing for me - I am 6'7" and the QF F bed was absolutely divine!!

God this has raised the bar for me, and I will no doubt suffer in the future :)

Pleased to hear you received the upgrade and enjoyed it :)
